Q: Mavericks Finder - how default to "double click opens new window"?

I am old and set in my ways.  I like having the Finder open a new window when I double click a folder.  Since 1984 I've arranged Finder windows in positions and sizes that suit me and I have never seen any reason to change.

In Mavericks however there does not seem to be a way to default to, "double click opens new Finder window".  My choices under Finder preferences are, open in the same window; or open in a tab.  I don't care for either.

Does anyone know of a way to restore the traditional Finder behavior in Mavericks?  Thanks in advance.

    Hope108,

It doesn't work like that on my Mac.

And for anyone suggesting to hide the Finder toolbar and sidebar, please,no more! That suggestion is not a solution.

Ok, Wizard.....didnt mean to contradict you....seems every mac is different...

I have put in tons of apple feedback since installing mavericks....never did feedback before.

finding alot of things that were very convenient and made less work not available anymore in Mavericks. however there are things I do like.

what I am saying, is I definitely feel your pain....

    warmly, hope

For me, a 2007 iMac, hiding the tool bar now allows me to open folders like I have since 1997.

Only problem is each and every folder I open has a tool bar that now needs to be hidden.

Thankfully when I go back each folder now has the tool bar I hide still hidden.

And I can double click to open in a new window.

Glad I don't work in Apple's Folder group, bet some heads are rolling, or being shown the door.

I'm afraid actually that this is exactly what Apple pays those people for - ruining the Finder.

(Until no one would ever want to use the Finder again and Apple achieved it's secret goal to move everyone to Launchpad)

hi kevin...did you try the automator suggestion, so that ALL folders then have the top and side hidden. see Hollanda's suggestions re: automator...it is back a few pages.

Well, as I see the things, the finder.app checks, if the command key is pressed.

So, Apple could reverse the code.

If the key is NOT pressed,  = new window.

If the key is pressed,  = same window.

This would be the easyiest solution, without big changes in preferences.

The best solution of course, when the user can select the method.

Thats neither a big deal but makes the customer happy.

The only thing is, the customer must inform Apple , that he needs this reverse action.

So, give feedback to Apple, if its important for you.

The Automator window view you helped us with is too fuzzy to read.

Please explain this process in greater detail.

Am looking forward to reporting that now I see.

I dunno....hiding toolbars, messing around with Automator etc. Ridiculous, really, isn't it. I am not having a go at those who have suggested the above, far from it. We should have to do neither of the above....or anything else, for that matter. Apple should reinstate the simple, easy way of opening a new folder.

Anybody reading this part of the forum for the first time, please make your feelings known to Apple by clicking the following link............

    Kevin....OMG...sooooo funny....love the baby....very cute...

well, if you click on that automator image, then it shows it very clearly....

turns out, that is a standard thing in these forums...one can click and see the image so much better....

they only thing is, I was asking hollanda a question about it, if I understood it clearly, the automator explanation she had given....

so you will have to read her comments too...

I gave up on that whole thing....

    I never did do that....

LIke Wizard is saying....it is pretty tricky.

I did report as feedback to apple too....

If you press option+command while double-clicking a folder icon, it opens in a new window with that folders contents. The previous folder closes. Pressing shift+command when double-clicking opens that folder as a new tab in the existing Finder window. Only pressing the command-key opens a new tab as before, but makes it the active tab.

I need to learn Apple's Automator app.

Have way too many folders to hide each toolbar one at a time.

And thats just on my iMac internal drive.

My outside **** drive is packed !

    Baby-smile.jpg

    I'll look into Automator.

I haven't been on these pages in ages, but this new Finder behavior got me searching Google and I finally came here to see what people were saying.  I, too, have sent Apple feedback requesting that a simple double click of a folder within a folder results in a new window.  Having to play with tabs or hold down a key or even use the back button in the window, all are counter-intuitive and time consuming.  I've been using Apple computers since '96, and I've been using OS X since 10.0.2, and every OS along the way has allowed for the double-click to open a folder into a new window.  I'd like to know what brainiac decided that twenty years of finder behavior needed to become MORE complicated, not less.  I can only hope that a check box will appear in an update that will allow us to go back to simply opening folders within folders with a double click.

Oh, and if some mod here (one of the reasons I stopped coming here is that what had been an open, helpful forum became a place for quick-fingered censoring and people trying to run up their post counts) feels that my use of the term "brainiac" is a reason for deleting this post, oh well.
