Q: Managed Settings missing in Profile Manager after upgrade to Server 3

I have a semi-production rollout of Macs and iPads using Pofile Manager for managed settings.  All had a Trust Profile and Enrollment profile installed from ML server.  After upgrading to Mavericks and Server v3, all my managed preferences (and all enrolled devices!) are missing from Profile Manager.  All the Device Groups I created in ML Server are still there, but the devices are no longer present.  It's a small rollout, so I can re-enroll them if necessary, but it's still a hassle.

Any ideas?

I am having the same issue, only I show the devices still as present in the device list, but no longer assigned to their appropriate device groups. I am trying to piece that together, since we are only at 150 or so devices. But, we are also missing all of the configured policies which is really part of the nightmare.

I also have a series of frozen active tasks that cannot be canceled now either.  I suppose my best advise to folks following in my mistaken footsteps would be to clear out all active tasks from PM before beginning the Mavericks upgrade.

    I am having similar issues.

    • My device groups still exist
      • They are empty
      • All the settings associated with said groups are gone
    • All of my enrolled devices are gone

I'm calling support right now and will update with more information when I get the word from Apple.

    Morning guys,

let me ask a interposed question: I'm in trouble with profilemanager in some diffrent way, see thread , the profiles I downloaded over mydevices are not signed. May you check your profiles if they are signed and check your logfiles for any errors? Espacial the profilemanager.log, I get following error on loading or sending out profiles:

It seems to be that the problem occours only with me and one other guy, didn't read anything on the net.

I have run into the same problem. My users came over from AD, my groups are still present but all my devices have disappeared and their settings are gone as well.

Having exactly the same problem here! Really glad my time machine backup worked!!

Please Apple, fix this annoying problem. Honestly I have never had any joy with profile manager, and if this was my first experience with an Apple product, I would NOT be impressed at all.

How did you get the database back out of Time Machine? That would be a great start for me at least.

Server 3 has a different schema for the Profile Manager database so just exporting the 2.2 version using a solution like "sudo pg_dump -U _postgres -c device_management > $HOME/device_management.sql" won't be a great fix for Server 3 necessarily.

In my case, I just restored the entire server from Time Machine backup to OS X 10.8.5 since it is only utilized for Profile Manager.  Once you are rolled back you can run the script from above, but again, I doubt it will do you much good in Server 3 without the modifications they are applying (quite poorly I might add since all the valuable data is getting lost in that transition).

brianw815 (or anybody else with this issue), can you attach the last 100 lines or so from /Library/Logs/ProfileManager/migration_tool.log ?

Profile Manager keeps your old data in another database so it is possible to re-run only Profile Manager migration without starting over from scratch with everything. If we can figure out why the migration is failing, it MIGHT be possible to get your Profile Manager data back without all the work of restoring backups and reinstalling everything.

Here is a chunk of my migration.log file. I think I see the problem. There is a large amount of records listed in the log that said failed to migrate.

    Thanks Paul,

So the primary error happened much earlier in the log. Can you look for the last line that contains "EXCEPTION" that doesn't have the message "current transaction is aborted" (i.e., the EXCEPTION line immediately before the first "current transaction is aborted" error)? That will probably be the error that caused everything else to fail. You might have to work your way backwards through hundreds of EXCEPTION lines. If you open the file in a text editor, search for "current transaction is aborted" and then scroll up from the first one you find. Please copy the hundred or so lines immediately BEFORE the first "current transaction is aborted" error.

    Thanks.

Thanks Paul. I know what the problem is now, but I don't yet have a good suggestion for how you can work around it. I'll post here if I come up with something.

Thanks I appreciate it. I also have an open call with Apple Enterprise support. I don't mind recreating the policies, I just need to figure out how to get the devices back in. I am still working on it as well.

Any idea if the old database might still be on the system somewhere to remigrate?

Yes, the old database is present and can be re-migrated. You can try this command to remove the data that's causing the problem from that copy of the old database. (The data being deleted comes from the device, so it can be recovered with an "Update Info" command once your migration is successful.)

    sudo psql -U _devicemgr -d device_management -h /Library/Server/ProfileManager/Config/var/PostgreSQL -c "update devices set \"InstalledApplicationList\" = NULL where \"InstalledApplicationList\" LIKE '%CS3%';"

Then you can re-run the migration with this command:

    sudo /Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/share/devicemgr/config/wipeDB. sh

You do not need to re-install anything, you do all this on your Server 3 installation and Profile Manager will find the old database and attempt a migration again. Note that this command will erase all data from the new Profile Manager database, so if you've done any work in the new Profile Manager it will be lost.
