Q: Can't link text boxes anymore

Just upgraded to the new Pages and can't find a way to link text boxes anymore like is described here:

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/pages-linking-text-boxes

Am I missing something, or is it really not possible anymore?

Cheers apple, not only can I no longer link new boxes, I can't go back to my previous version of pages, and the 220 page document I'm working on won't acknowledge the related boxes anymore- extremely frustrating!!!!

Why on earth would they disable this feature?? crazy. Back to Indesign I go...

I'm afraid I'll have to abandon Pages for layout work, too. What a fiasco.

Hopefully a third party will come in and create something wonderful and affordable. InDesign Express maybe?

If anyone finds a real workaround, please post it - although it looks like Apple happily deleted an entire class of users along with the older version of Pages.

Another example of the downgrade we got in the new pages is that it seems you can no longer command-click to select none continguous text.  Way to break a standard Apple feature.  Ugh, less than 24-hours with this progam and it is the worst thing that I have seen Apple release.

I share in the frustration too. Have just updated to the new version of pages only to discover that every text box in a project I was working on has been unlinked. This is the most basic of features for any kind of page layout application and they've removed it - it makes absolutely no sense! Really disappointed in apple.

I have just discovered that, providing you had the previous version of Pages '09 installed, you can at least open pages '09 from your applications folder (Applications > iWork '09 > Pages). You can export files that have been updated to the new version back to '09 versions using the File > Export to... command. Unfortunately I can't seem to re-link the text boxes though. Not sure if anyone else figures out how to?

Hope this at least helps people a little.

Yes this is a crazy ommission, makes this pretty unusable for me. For anyone who does any serious multipage layouts this feature is a must.

I have reviewed accordingly on the iTunes store, suggest everyone does the same and we may get this changed. Sometimes I wonder about my beloved Apple.

I suggest everyone submit a request on the feedback page also!

This is insane. GET LINKED BOXES BACK NOW.  I'm a huge apple fan, but I'm not pleased with the latest updates to Keynote or Pages.  The before and after line spacing feature is gone (which I use all the time), and the linked boxes. I use this every week for a bulletin I put out. What are they thinking. No I don't want a dumbed down pages app just so it functions better on an iPad. It has promise if they would just add back some of the really nice features that were on Pages 09.  I hope apple is listening to these complaints. One of the best selling points of apple is ease of use. Right now they are making my life harder.

@bmoody16 I'm pretty sure you can still customize 'line spacing':

Click on some text in your doc or on your slide. On the "Text" pane at right, down toward the bottom, click the arrow to the left of the "Spacing" option.

Is that the "line spacing feature" you were looing for?

I would suggest we make our voices heard on the review section of the App Store.

I tried to leave a review and guess what, because I didn't buy the Pages 5 app through the App Store but installed it as an "upgrade" the App Store wouldn't let me!!

Ditto to all of this.  I found Pages to be one of the best word processor/layout programs out there, but version 5.0 is HORRIBLE.  I'm going back to the old one.

I just upgraded to a new Mac Mini and the new Pages.  I open one then the other of two novels I am writing (200 pages plus on each) and the text boxes are unlinked!  You have got to be kidding me!  Will the genius from Apple who decide that one deosn't need to have their editing and rewriting carry forward to the next friggin' page, please explain!   Without being able to simply add a sentance to a page and have the rest of the text move appropriately on the pages that follow is insane!  This new Pages is of absolutely no value at all and this makes me more than angry!   I simply can't believe we are even talking about something as basic and fundamental as this!

    FIX IT!!!

Why did you write a novel using linked text boxes?

Why not use a Word Processing template?

I have no idea.  I've been writing this project for a year on my old Mac and Pages.  I buy a new computer, load Pages and bring the project into it.  I see a window that says the text boxes are unlinked.  If there's something I'm missing, could you tell me how to link the text boxes, or whatever has to be done, so that the enitre project moves if I edit in the middle somewhere.  Could be I've been doing this wrong all along, but right now I'm can't see how to fix it.

How do I change to a word processing template?

    Thanks

The easiest way is probably to create a new document - it will be in word processor mode (since that's the only mode left in Pages 5) so the text will flow from page to page automatically.

Open the old document, select all the text in each text box and paste it in order into the new document.

Text box linking was eliminated in Pages 5 - but it's not necessary for novels since you can have multiple columns, sections, etc. without it.

You're lucky - I can't recover my page layouts and have to revert to Pages 09!
