Pages 5 features checklist

As you go through the new Pages 5 can you please add an added, missing or altered features here please.

I will start with some culled from the general discussions and if you could correct any errors add them:

Added

1. Right to Left text ie Arabic, Farsi & Hebrew. Uncertain about Pashtu

2. Single model templates. You turn off document text to get rid of the default. Not sure if this then can be mixed and matched with Word Processing templates

3. Able to share outside iCloud

Missing

1. Selecting non-contiguous text gone

2. Outline view appears gone

3. Customizable Toolbar is gone

4. Many templates appear gone

5. Captured pages gone

6. Reorganize pages by dragging gone

7. Duplicate pages gone

8. Subscript/superscript buttons gone

9. Select all instances of a Style is gone

10. Retain zoom level of document gone

11. Facing pages gone

12. Endnotes gone

13. Media Inspector can't find iPhoto library on external drive

14. Update is missing for older installations, Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on the ir Support Download site

Altered

1. Language set under Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar now document wide

2. Subscript/superscript text is now a convoluted route Gear > Advanced options > Baseline > Subscript/Superscript

3. Header appears to be multi-column

4. New file format (but still .pages?) not backwardly compatible

5. Page numbering method changed

6. T.O.C. appears buggy

7. Template file storage location moved - to where?

8. Imported older .pages files are not translating properly

9. Text language is detected automatically now

Letting you know I can't test or verify any of these as I haven't got Mavericks yet.

I expect from your wording you know that superscript and subscript are still available, just not by button, but for the use of anyone else stumbling upon this thread (it took me a couple of minutes to find them): in the Text Format panel, make sure you have the Style tab selected. In the font section, press the little gear for Advanced Options. From the drop-down box next to Baseline, you can select superscript or subscript. (This is a lot of work if you use these formatting options a lot, but you can define a character style to make things a little quicker.)

Endnotes are not gone; they're just treated as a kind of footnote. In the Footnote Format panel, under type, you can select from Footnotes, Document Endnotes, or Section Endnotes.

Peter,

I know you won't shed any tears over the loss of Page Layout mode, but it's gone too.

Oops - found the key to removing the Text Layer...

Create a page layout document

You can remove the body text area of a document and then use the page as if it’s a blank canvas.

Note: When you turn off the document body, body text and all objects set to Inline with Text are deleted (other objects are changed to Stay on Page). To save the text, copy it first, then paste it into a text box (or into another Pages document).

  • In the Document pane of the Setup inspector, deselect the Document Body checkbox.
  • Click Remove in the dialog.

Not quite true that I wouldn't miss Page Layout 🙂, just the way Apple had implemented it.

It had its uses and the new method is logical as far as it goes. However it gets you back to the old clumsy methods of Page Layout before totally emasculating it by removing Textbox linking.

Did Apple really hate Pages and the Pages Users this much? It is like they shot it in the head, broke its legs, torched it, and then run over it with the car for good luck.

I would say Pages R.I.P., but the new Pages has just joined the line of Living-Dead Apps that Apple has reconstructed from the corpses of its previously usable iSuites.

btw When I predicted this was the way Apple was going to go, I didn't think they were going to cripple Pages this much, this fast.

All of my documents created with Pages 4.3 are unusable in Pages 5 because of missing features.

Images in tables are simply deleted if I open a document in Pages 5. If you previously used for example Mathtype (or even Apples Grapher App) to insert equations, you will not be able to place them in a table anymore. This is horrible!

I bought Pages 5 and am not going to use it anymore. Older documents always do have to work with never versions. That's what Microsoft had to learn years ago. If Apple won't fix this, they'll have many users switched (back) to Microsoft Office.
