You are in a loop mythmatic.

Where has anyone denied you the use of Pages 5?

We are concerned with Apple's removal of Pages '09 and its functionality.

If it wants to introduce a half baked alternative fine, but don't kill off the better existing solution.

If Pages 5 is the better alternative what's the problem? The Users will choose it.

That Apple won't let the Users decide leads to the conclusion that they don't believe the Users will agree with Apple. To avoid that alarming prospect they are removing the choice.

Not deleting Pages '09 from the hard drives of Users who already own it, is a sop to prevent possible lawsuits. Users have paid for the software. Apple would be liable for damages, especially if there was nothing to open prior work.

It helps to muddy the water which sure has worked on the press and those so accustomed to genuflecting in the direction of Cupertino they just can't get out of the habit.

btw You really don't have a clue how to use TextEdit or what it is capable of.

I think the writing has been on the wall for professional and business customers for a long time. And not just software. Remember the XServe?

And yet they're just about to release a new Mac Pro that's priced waaaay out of reach for anybody but serious professional users, and obviously took years and gobs of money to develop.

I AM confused.

I think that was just a designers toy. Ives even got to make a red one.

We used to do that when we had a bit of spare time in the Studio. They are called Director's follies.

Peter,

I don't dispute any of your complaints with Apple's handling of Pages '09 users and the update to Pages 5.0. I never have.

What happened here is I gave an example of a beneficial use case for Pages 5.0 to another commenter (not you) in response to something they posted. You replied to my post (which was not made to you) with two replies:

If the doc is that simple, what is the point of Pages at all?

Just use TextEdit which always could open and save as .doc.

That argument just fails under its own weight.

Peter

followed later by another reply to my same post:

That is a rather weak rationalisation.

Why then did Apple withdraw iWork '09 (something people were willingly paying for) from the App Store and push a non-paying version down their throats?

I asked you to clarify your critical remarks and to explain a) what they had to do with my example and b) what your problem is with someone sharing a single, specific, positive use case for Pages 5.0 based on some of its new features.

Since then you have responded by continuing to rant about Apple and who is denied what, and the end of the world for pro users, etc. ad nauseum without ever explaining what your problem is with my post was in the first place that you felt compelled to attempt two times to refute it as a "pointless" usage and somehow a "rationalization" for all the evil you perceive Apple to be doing.

btw You really don't have a clue how to use TextEdit or what it is capable of.

Not only is that typical of your contemptuous posting style, but it's completely irrelevant and frankly, lame. If you'd like to start a thread demonstrating how Text Edit is superior to Pages for text and object styles, image handling, document layout and real-time collaboration through the browser with mutliple users, be sure to send me a link. You'll understand, I'm sure, if I don't hold my breath waiting for you to provide that explanation.

TL;DR - this thread would be more useful and productive if you stuck with your original mission to document features additions, removals and changes, instead of trolling anybody who doesn't hate Pages 5.0 as much as you do.

Oct 29, 2013 10:55 PM in response to mythmatic

But it is exactly to the point mythmatic.

You are saying a cut down Pages suits you and others like you. Fine.

TextEdit Opens and Saves .doc files directly, no Export/Import.

We have always recommended it as a good test for any problem Word files in Pages. It isn't 100% compatible, but then neither is Pages '09 nor Pages 5.

It has got Styles (which you are confusing with the Font palette), Multimedia, Lists and a whole lot more. iText Express which is a free superset of TextEdit unlocks the many other hidden features in TextEdit such as multiple columns and sophisticated Table creation and Editing.

As such TextEdit will suit a cut down role perfectly, so what exactly is the point of Pages if it is a race to the bottom?

If you are happy with Pages because it has less, then there will certainly be others who will be happy with even less.

The only ones who will be unhappy are those who need what Pages already has, but is being taken away.

It isn't a matter of "hating" Pages 5, its just a stupid waste of time and resources by Apple, to hurt its customers.

Apple is saying we are not going to sell you the extremely useful and functional Pages '09, here is what is going to replace it. Oh you can hang onto your old Pages '09 for as long as we let it still work, but we will make it increasingly difficult for you to do so, and you will know that eventually it will be useless along with all your work that spent so much time and money on.

What will that cost Apple? Not much. What will it cost its Users? A lot.

No way of beating around the bush. That is callous indifference to its users.

That's nice Tristan, except versioning is independent of "Time Machine" the backup feature, even though it uses the same engine. But it doesn't matter. You'll just drop 10¢ words and ignore my point anyway. I'm 10,000% sure of that.

I habend had time to test your proposed workflow yet but I'll report my findings when I do. I'm only trying to help, unlike you, who just seems to want to throwa wrench in the works and complain about it.

Oct 30, 2013 2:05 AM in response to Dalavia

This version will not run on Lion (10.7) and later, as it requires Rosetta, which is no longer supported. Furthermore, Adobe said that downloading was only legal if you were a CS2 owner, so it's the equivalent of a Torrent file if you're not. See: http://www.digitalartsonline.co.uk/news/creative-software/adobe-denies-free-cs2- downloads-are-giveaway/

Dalavia wrote:

Adobe InDesign is the page layout app that I used to use (in an earlier version) before I changed over to Pages. It is a powerful DTP app, but not nearly as intuitive as Pages 4.3.

I tried installing this latest version using the link provided, but I kept getting repeated Error messages. My guess (and that's all it is) is that the free download might not be compatible with OS 10.9 Mavericks.

Hahaha Hans, that's really funny. You aren't alone in thinking that Apple's marketing hyperbole got a little out of hand with this one. Thanks for putting a smile on my face.

Actually, is there any chance we can get back to the original intention of this thread i.e. compilation of the definitive list of differences? That can at least help us all be more constructive in our feedback to Apple.

PeterBreis0807, where's the latest?
