They have also removed autocorrection. There's no way to get the singular pronoun 'I' and the first letter of a sentence capitalized automatically. The whole feature of allowing autocorrection is gone!

I must confess you made me smile for the first time in all this discussion. There is nothing I hated more than autocorrection, which I turn off every time I can, so I will certainly NOT complain about this one :-D

I have used Pages since it came out and the day I upgraded to version 5 was my worst day ever with an Apple application.

Missing:

Where are the headers in my old document? Autocapitalizing the first letter of a sentence? Why do the format take up a huge part of my screen now? Why do I need to readjust every single document's view size, when I had them set previously a certain way that worked well for me?

I'm going back to Pages 09, very disappointed. If there's not a big improvement, I may have to look at MS Word, and I haven't used that since Pages was released (it's not even on my computer). What on earth did Apple do to this app, and why?

Oct 31, 2013 1:27 PM in response to Matcha

Matcha,

What did Apple do? Make Pages so it runs nicely with IOS7 Pages.

Why did Apple do it? Because they like IOS users.

I've already gone back to Pages '09 (4.3). I'm already using MS Office for the Mac. And unless Apple gives up this ridiculous "upgrade" policy, I'm switching hardware too... because the reason I went Apple in the first place has all but disappeared, and what's left is going fast.

Wait. How is it that speech to text is now broken in Pages'09 under Mavericks?!

I thought they were counting the new power of speech to text in Mavericks?

Did they purposely break it for Pages'09???

Also, can anyone tell me if footnotes still function the same way?

I'm an author and I have hundreds of pages of technical writing in Pages'09 using footnotes!

In my book, Pages 5 (and the other iWork programs) IS a total disaster, and may prove the undoing of Apple, at least for those of us who actually use computers and not just tablets. I don't want to run IOS type programs on my Mac. It's meant for so much more...

IMO with Intel going ARM CPUs now, we will see Mac and Macbooks with ARM processors much faster than we do like! iOS will invade the Macs. Pages 5 is just the beginning. See contacts in OSX it's a copy of the IOS version. I liked the old version much more!

Or the Maps app on OSX minimalistic functions. though I like the feature to send calculated routes to my iDevices, why can't I send it to anyone of my contacts, at least those with iPhones? (yes it works via email, facebook…)

Many functions in OSX are crippled in favour of iOS. As long as investors like ICAHN make the rules, it will be a dark future for apple. iPhone/iPad/iOS rules, makes most cash, so all other components are obsolete.

But shall I jump ship? No, because Windows with their PCs is going the same direction! Had to configure Win 8 on my sister's laptop. Nightmare! BTW of all the computers I own and owned, I never had a Windows based system.

Peter,

This is how it worked for me:

1. Click on the cell you want to insert to.

2. Select CELL on the right contextual menu.

4. Click on FILL and select IMAGE FILL.

5. Click CHOOSE then select the image from Finder.

6. Tweak the size using the Size slider or drop down menu.

Haven't discovered yet if there is a way to tweak the alignment within the cell.

emandelapaz, thanks for the response. I see what you are doing, but I believe this is different than putting an image in a cell. The Image Fill method is setting the background fill of the cell. Select stretch and it will fill the whole cell. This is why we can not adjust the alignment. However, I believe this is different than adding images. Image fill will only allow one image, as it is the background.

I have questionaires that I use in language classes for small children that contain 10 images in one cell. I can still format a page to do the same thing, but working with a table made it much more easy to do.

Thank you all for articulating the process/issue I'm trying to grapple with.

I must be able to place, and align, images in cells.

We have large Avery labels which we use for our food packaging.

I'm glad I can still use Pages '09, or I would be back to WORD.

BUT we can all assume /fear the fate of the older Pages in Apples update plans...

We're probably gonna learn its dead when OS 11 comes out, as we faced with AppleWorks.

And earlier, with Clarisworks.

Does anyone remeber iWeb. I great simple web authoring tool. Apple ditched that too. I agree with everthing said about Apple downgrading Pages to cater for the lot who want to use their iPads in sync. But some of us need a real word processor for serious work, not an iPad toy.

As much as I hate to say it. (I throw my Windows machine out the window in 1995.) I seriously consider buying Word again.

emandelapaz, thanks for the response. I see what you are doing, but I believe this is different than putting an image in a cell.

Indeed, this is ONE of the two methods available in Pages 4.3, by which you can have an image appear in a cell; with a thread of epic proportions such as this one, it is not possible to easily see, but this was discussed before/above (I contributed in that discussion, so I apologize for the repetition). The "Image Fill" places the image in the farthest background (text can only appear in front of it), and the image manipulations are limited to Original Size/Stretch/Tile/Scale to Fit/Scale to Fit. In particular, you can neither mask/crop the image nor resize it arbitrarily, neither by dragging the image-outline guides nor by typing in numerical data.

The OTHER method in Pages 4.3 is to drag-and-drop an image to anywhere in the Pages document, mask/crop it and resize it, then cut (Cmd-X) it, click inside the desired cell, and paste (CMD-V) it inside the cell. This makes the (masked/cropped) image an "in-line" object, for which far more choices in manipulation exist. For one, text goes "around" the image... [oops; posted too soon; to be continued]
