Pages 5 features checklist

As you go through the new Pages 5 can you please add an added, missing or altered features here please.

I will start with some culled from the general discussions and if you could correct any errors add them:

Added

1. Right to Left text ie Arabic, Farsi & Hebrew. Uncertain about Pashtu

2. Single model templates. You turn off document text to get rid of the default. Not sure if this then can be mixed and matched with Word Processing templates

3. Able to share outside iCloud

Missing

1. Selecting non-contiguous text gone

2. Outline view appears gone

3. Customizable Toolbar is gone

4. Many templates appear gone

5. Captured pages gone

6. Reorganize pages by dragging gone

7. Duplicate pages gone

8. Subscript/superscript buttons gone

9. Select all instances of a Style is gone

10. Retain zoom level of document gone

11. Facing pages gone

12. Endnotes gone

13. Media Inspector can't find iPhoto library on external drive

14. Update is missing for older installations, Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on the ir Support Download site

Altered

1. Language set under Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar now document wide

2. Subscript/superscript text is now a convoluted route Gear > Advanced options > Baseline > Subscript/Superscript

3. Header appears to be multi-column

4. New file format (but still .pages?) not backwardly compatible

5. Page numbering method changed

6. T.O.C. appears buggy

7. Template file storage location moved - to where?

8. Imported older .pages files are not translating properly

9. Text language is detected automatically now

Letting you know I can't test or verify any of these as I haven't got Mavericks yet.

Peter:

Although the iCloud Open/Save dialogue box (and on the iPad) is not strictly part of Pages, the whole iOS/OSX cross-device synchronizability (whew!) is what seems to have caused the mess. Here's another issue I have, and I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a (secrecy) GUI feature, a brainless omission, a bug, or perhaps gremlins are on the lose in my iPad. When attempting to open an iCloud file from your iPad, the graphical/textual cues are definitely ...ahem... less than helpful:

User uploaded file

The same files show up better on the OSX Open/Save GUI:

User uploaded file

(The bottom-center file does have a blank 1st page, which then shows up as the custom icon...) Even on OSX, one of the files remains with a generic icon, and while the folder is previewed, there are not file-names. So, in a working environment with dozens of dozens of documents... how is one to find anything? (I'm assuming that this "feature" is not limited to my own devices.)

Downloading...

User uploaded file

Pages13 (update = 290MB): "Customize the toolbar with your most important tools, Center and edge guides ad on by default, Stability improvement and bug fixes." (I don't suspect the bug fixes include the other 80 or so missing features.)

The toolbar customization now allows putting a sub/superscript button there, which was one other of the missing features:

User uploaded file

Also, by removing the text, the toolbar takes up less vertical space and the individual icons take up less horizontal space.

Hey Robo, we're looking for a guinea pig to try the Pages update!”

Cosmo,

I’ve watched this discussion closely from the start, but not contributed until now. I feel the need to say a few serious words.

As a fairly heavy user of iWork ’09, and having started with ClarisWorks, I detest Pages 5 and the way Apple have foisted it on us with precious little, or no regard for faithful users and their valuable documents.

My point is this:

I think your invitation to robo is the beat-all, hands-down, no-nonsense, funniest thing I’ve seen in this discussion so far. No question. I simply could notbegin to tell you how badly it cracked me up. No kidding. I’ve been laughing for at least 20 minutes – and counting.

Kind regards and thanks a million.

Seriously, apple, ***?

Please update pages WITH at least the alignment guides, vertical ruler, and option to rearrange pages in document. PLEASE.

The new pages upgrade is HORRIBLE. The only reason I upgraded was so I could sync documents from my mac pro to my ipad through sharing and icloud.

If I had known...

So, basically if you want to enjoy pages as a valuable work tool, keep the old version.

DO NOT UPGRADE.

I am really peeved about the missing vertical ruler and alignment guides. What did you expect apple—for us to put rulers to our screens?

Peter

Peter,

Thanks for your well-organized list. You have one item that the list shows as missing, and in reality Apple just moved the handle:

Create series in cells by drag extend samples

The Fill Handle has moved from the lower right corner to the midpoint of the selection border, and the handle has changed from a white circle to a yellow circle.

Jerry

Thanks Jerry

I'l correct the list to move that to changed.

This is a large part of the problem. Apple keeps moving the furniture around and hiding it so we don't know if it went overboard or is just somewhere we can't find it. Apple not talking to us only adds to the huge problems it has created.
