Q: Pages 5 features checklist

As you go through the new Pages 5 can you please add an added, missing or altered features here please.

I will start with some culled from the general discussions and if you could correct any errors add them:

Added

1. Right to Left text ie Arabic, Farsi & Hebrew. Uncertain about Pashtu

2. Single model templates. You turn off document text to get rid of the default. Not sure if this then can be mixed and matched with Word Processing templates

3. Able to share outside iCloud

Missing

1. Selecting non-contiguous text gone

2. Outline view appears gone

3. Customizable Toolbar is gone

4. Many templates appear gone

5. Captured pages gone

6. Reorganize pages by dragging gone

7. Duplicate pages gone

8. Subscript/superscript buttons gone

9. Select all instances of a Style is gone

10. Retain zoom level of document gone

11. Facing pages gone

12. Endnotes gone

13. Media Inspector can't find iPhoto library on external drive

14. Update is missing for older installations, Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on the ir Support Download site

Altered

1. Language set under Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar now document wide

2. Subscript/superscript text is now a convoluted route Gear > Advanced options > Baseline > Subscript/Superscript

3. Header appears to be multi-column

4. New file format (but still .pages?) not backwardly compatible

5. Page numbering method changed

6. T.O.C. appears buggy

7. Template file storage location moved - to where?

8. Imported older .pages files are not translating properly

9. Text language is detected automatically now

Letting you know I can't test or verify any of these as I haven't got Mavericks yet.

I can only encourage everyone to send feedback to Apple:

    --> http://www.apple.com/feedback/pages.html

I'm well aware that it won't change anything within the next few days, weeks or maybe even months... but if they recieve hundreds and thousands of negative feedback reports they might actually know that they should bring back some features.

I am SO totally disappointed.  Waited so long for Apple to release a new version of iWork, especially Pages.  It looks like this new version is NO GOOd.  I will NOT install it.

I am also very leary about Mavericks.  Makes you wonder why Apple is giving all this away for free.  Reminds me of the old saying that nothing is free, there's always a price.  The price for these latest version is FUNCTIONALITY ... big time.

So, I did send feedback to Apple.  But, what else can we do?  Start looking at MS Word??  I have looked at NeoOffice, OpenOffice, and LibreOffice.  They don't compare to [my] Pages!!!  I use it every day and have gigs of Pages files.

Thanks Peter for your post; very enlightening.

In the meantime, you just keep using Pages 4.3.  It's as good as it was last Friday.

Guess so.  I'm still using 4.0.4, I am SL 10.6.8. Never went to L or ML, or updated to 4.3, mainly because the Save and Save As was so confusing.  I thought that I would wait until Apple released a new version of iWork.

BAM!  What a slap in the face.  Not all of us use or want to use iPads, iPhones, etc.

Oh man, I thought Apple would push iWork even more forward.

And what we got is a polished version whose functionality has been limited in many ways.

If there was at least a paid alternative! I don't want to go back to Microsoft Office.

No, that's only half right. You can only use Images as background of a cell.

So you won't be able to set its size or to write a sentence in a cell with (for example) a math equation betweeen two words. I used Pages to make all my math worksheets. Btw: Mathtype doesn't work with Pages 5 either :-/

Not correct.  It still works, but only outside tables.

This is terrible! No Mail Merge makes Pages useless! Very bad move to drop all these features. Between the dismall iOS 7 and iWork, I am one more bad update away from breaking up for good with the company formerly known as Apple Computer Inc.

Keep in Mind that the New Pages is free!

Apple is trying to integrate the iWork bundle with the iOS devices and the iCloud Web apps, so they are doing a good job on that, specialy on the multiple people collaboration part. Unfortunately for the rest of us that are using advance wordprocessing features the software is not there yet.  Is sad that they decided to remove features from Pages 09 just for making it compatible with the iPad and iCloud version, but there you go... that is why they are giving it for free, because they know they are hurting few of us.

Anyway Pages 09 is good but MSWord is definitively better however the MAC version is not as good as the Windows version. Sometimes it gets very slow specialy if you are editing a file that is stored on a network drive. In terms of flexibility and functionality Microsoft Word is a better choice. But if you are looking for a professional publisher I would recommend Adobe InDesign which is a little expensive. So, for those like me Swift Publisher is a decent alternative. Or just install Fusion from VMWare on your Mac and then you can install a full version of Windows 8 with MSOffice on a Virtual Machine and run it using unity mode.  All the apps will looks like are running natively on the Mac OS.  I had to do itbecause my wife needs to use MSPublisher to collaborate with other people from the Church and MSPublisher is not available for the Mac.

I am sure that Apple will add more features later, the question is if the app will remains free, how long it will take.  I have been waiting for more than a year to have a landscape mode available for the iPhone version of Numbers and is not there yet.

    Have a good day!

Character styles seem to still be there: when "Text" is selected in the "Format" sidebar. Provided the style is set to something other than "None", you can add a new character style based on selected text by using the + , then renaming it. It seems to do the same as '09, except there's now less words in the explanation of what's being done, and seems a little more convoluted, although it may work better in documents made in 5, rather than '09 ones.

More worryingly, two '09 files I made duplicates of (just in case) and opened in Pages 5 now won't open again in Pages 5, because one says: "File name copy.pages" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. Pages created this file on an unknown date.  No, Pages 5, it was just now, if you recall.

The other file won't open because Pages says "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document". Newer than Pages 5, does it mean?

Our 24 page product catalogue now has 26 pages in Pages 5 (I opened a copy, can't be too careful), which may just be a formatting problem (bit more than an issue).

I’m amazed so many people call iWork “free” software. Yes, this upgrade (or rater downgrade) was free, but I paid for iWorks on DVD and Pages hasn’t seen any upgrade since I bought it in 2010. That means it hasn’t been upgraded in 4 years.

Father more - iWork for iOS (and I did pay for that as well) is now more or less unusable. And I had to pull all my Pages documents down from iCloud in case I would accidentally open them in iOS or on the web. So I lost more than I gained with this “free upgrade”.
