Q: Pages 5 features checklist

As you go through the new Pages 5 can you please add an added, missing or altered features here please.

I will start with some culled from the general discussions and if you could correct any errors add them:

Added

1. Right to Left text ie Arabic, Farsi & Hebrew. Uncertain about Pashtu

2. Single model templates. You turn off document text to get rid of the default. Not sure if this then can be mixed and matched with Word Processing templates

3. Able to share outside iCloud

Missing

1. Selecting non-contiguous text gone

2. Outline view appears gone

3. Customizable Toolbar is gone

4. Many templates appear gone

5. Captured pages gone

6. Reorganize pages by dragging gone

7. Duplicate pages gone

8. Subscript/superscript buttons gone

9. Select all instances of a Style is gone

10. Retain zoom level of document gone

11. Facing pages gone

12. Endnotes gone

13. Media Inspector can't find iPhoto library on external drive

14. Update is missing for older installations, Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on the ir Support Download site

Altered

1. Language set under Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar now document wide

2. Subscript/superscript text is now a convoluted route Gear > Advanced options > Baseline > Subscript/Superscript

3. Header appears to be multi-column

4. New file format (but still .pages?) not backwardly compatible

5. Page numbering method changed

6. T.O.C. appears buggy

7. Template file storage location moved - to where?

8. Imported older .pages files are not translating properly

9. Text language is detected automatically now

Letting you know I can't test or verify any of these as I haven't got Mavericks yet.

    Tod,

Please do not misunderstand me.  I do not like MSPublisher is just that all the people at Church is using it so my wife is forced to use it in order to collaborate with the other people at Church.  I actually prefer CS6 InDesign but I also understand that it is a an expensive solution for most of the people that do couple of small projects a month. So I think that Swift Publisher is a very inexpensive alternative for that people. However as I said my wife had no choice but to use MSPublisher for all the Church related projects. So in order to make it happend I installed VMWare Fusion 5 in my MacMini and created a Windows 8 virtual machine in order to run MSPublisher on my Mac.  Funny but it is the first time I have seen Windows running so smooth.  It might be related to the quality of the Apple hardware and that I am using a Full standard version of Windows instead of a Computer's Manufacturer version full of drivers for their own hardware.

    thanks,

If you are using virtualisation to run Windows Serif PagePlus X7 is well worth a look.

It looks very impressive for the low price. I wish they would port it to OSX.

@wfpIndiana:  Nice clarification.  I can see where people are locked into things like MSP.  :-(    My own needs are not such that I'm in the market for InDesign, which, I know from others, is quite an impressive app.

    linda2009,

I do not use it very often but based on my experience on the few projects I created I really like the simplicity and clean interface it has.  It does not have a lot of customization or high end features but for Flyers, Newsletters, menus, calendars, Brochures it is just what an average user will need.  I love the TextArt application it has, but you need to purchase the full version separate in order to have full functionality. It is not expensive and it is awesome for text headings.

But let me tell you something... if you really like Pages 09, there is no reason why you cannot have Pages 09 and the new Pages both running on your Mac.  When I realized all the features I lost with the new version of Pages I was trying to re-install my paid version of Pages '09 and figured out that it was there in my Applications folder.  The upgrade did not uninstall iWork '09 it just created a folder called iWork '09 in my Applications folder so I have them both running on my Mac.

Why I want to have them both?  Well, I really like the new collaboration feature of the new version and also the nice compatibility with my iPad. So for small projects that I started on my iPad and want to have that functionality I use the New Pages, but for more sophisticated projects that I do not really need to move it to my mobile devices I use Pages '09.

    Hope this help!

It seems pretty normal for Apple to include less features when they rewrite software and, in time, add them back in.  It also seems pretty normal for people to overreact.

iMovie and FCX come to mind.

It is not overreacting when the rewritten software destroys their work or makes their work untenable.

btw Apple has not entirely reinstated features and workflows in iMovie and FCX and there is a very long list of other software where they have never replaced or reinstated anything at all.

    Peter

Well since the new software hasn't changed anyone's situation from 2 days ago then I guess we agree everyone is overreacting.

Your words "not entirely reinstated" also mean Apple reinstated up to 99.99% of the features and workflows so I guess we agree there too.

TodfromIndiana::  Would you say Mountain Lion is better to run versus Snow Leopard?

What about the constant saving going on in the background? -- doesn't it use a lot of disk space.  I suppose Mavericks does this too.

I'm using Snow Leopard.  I was going to go up to ML, but then I saw Mavericks coming and waited.  Now I can't decide which!!  (I don't mind paying th $20 if ML is more stable.)

Peter,  What about you?  Would you say ML runs more stable now?  Would you recommend using instead of SL?

**I know this is a Pages thread, but I use iWork/Pages everyday and it is a big part of my concern with upgrading the OS.  So if Pages users recommend one OS, that opinion/advice is important to me.

You can put accented characters in footers.Screen Shot 2013-10-24 at 10.15.35 PM.png

Also, regarding the update for older installations, do you mean older versions of OS X or older versions of Pages? I believe Apple has finished making changes to the way the App Store detects updates - any old version of Pages should be detected and offer the update.

Also, did the previous Pages auto capitalize the first character in sentences? OS X doesn't do that in any apps unfortunately.

I'm among the many (previous) users of Pages. I have used it daily for work for years. The new version slows me down so much that I am going to have to change to an alternative. The immediate usability problems for me revolve around the dramatic dumbing down and de-featuring of track changes. The very usable sidebar posting of comments and changes has been changed to pop-up ballons that never pop up when I need them and always pop up when I don't. Track changes now requires a trip to the menu, with no keyboard shortcut. The toolbar buttons are not modifiable, and the many facets under "inspector" are now broken up into separate windows. Export remains annoyingly handicapped, and always requires at least one superfluous window selection.

People who are actually using this software to work need keyboard shortcuts, configurability, and scripting - not eye candy or a gutting of the functions available.

Joey!!  - Yes, Pages capitalizes first word of sentence.  Also you can choose to do Title Caps.  Menu, Format, Font, Capitalization, Title.  When the None is checked, it seems to just Cap first word of sentence.

If it's not doing that anymore, then is it trying to behave like an iPhone?  You know most text in lower case letters, hardly using Caps.

    Seems like more "dumbing-down."

You are just making up that 99.99%, which is NOT what I said.

Did Apple reinstate the editing functions from the older QuickTime? No. They remain exactly the same.

Did they reinstate AppleWorks? No. I can not get at my tax records.

Did Apple reinstate HyperCard making all the thousands of stacks available again? No.

FileMaker has canned Bento leaving the Beto users nowhere to go as FileMaker simply doesn't do what Bento did and it doesn't open Bento files.

Even with Final Cut Pro, after quite a wait it is nowhere near this concocted 99.99%

You may just be fooling around with software, or even throwing a spanner in the works for something you don't even use (like some here), but others need to get work done and have vital files in Pages.

Are you just an Apple stooge running a black ops for the corporation? What otherwise is your motivation?

Not correct.  It still works, but only outside tables.

I tried it. But inserting the equation did not work. I only got a grey block instead of the equation.

If it worked on your system, I maybe got other technical problems.
