Q: Pages 5 features checklist

As you go through the new Pages 5 can you please add an added, missing or altered features here please.

I will start with some culled from the general discussions and if you could correct any errors add them:

Added

1. Right to Left text ie Arabic, Farsi & Hebrew. Uncertain about Pashtu

2. Single model templates. You turn off document text to get rid of the default. Not sure if this then can be mixed and matched with Word Processing templates

3. Able to share outside iCloud

Missing

1. Selecting non-contiguous text gone

2. Outline view appears gone

3. Customizable Toolbar is gone

4. Many templates appear gone

5. Captured pages gone

6. Reorganize pages by dragging gone

7. Duplicate pages gone

8. Subscript/superscript buttons gone

9. Select all instances of a Style is gone

10. Retain zoom level of document gone

11. Facing pages gone

12. Endnotes gone

13. Media Inspector can't find iPhoto library on external drive

14. Update is missing for older installations, Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on the ir Support Download site

Altered

1. Language set under Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar now document wide

2. Subscript/superscript text is now a convoluted route Gear > Advanced options > Baseline > Subscript/Superscript

3. Header appears to be multi-column

4. New file format (but still .pages?) not backwardly compatible

5. Page numbering method changed

6. T.O.C. appears buggy

7. Template file storage location moved - to where?

8. Imported older .pages files are not translating properly

9. Text language is detected automatically now

Letting you know I can't test or verify any of these as I haven't got Mavericks yet.

If you want to stick with Snow Leopard you can have most of the features of Mavericks like Tabbed Finder and Tagging, without the downside. I am currently back in Snow Leopard after losing my 2nd external hard drive.

I can't be 100% sure it was Mountain Lion to blame for trashing the journaling on the drives, but it is the first time that has ever happened to me.

Mountain Lion I think is mostly fine now so long as you don't mind the auto-saving, and hidden System Files.

Your words "not entirely reinstated" also mean Apple reinstated up to 99.99% of the features and workflows so I guess we agree there too.

You are just making up that 99.99%, which is NOT what I said.

Did Apple reinstate the editing functions from the older QuickTime? No. They remain exactly the same.

Did they reinstate AppleWorks? No. I can not get at my tax records.

Did Apple reinstate HyperCard making all the thousands of stacks available again? No.

FileMaker has canned Bento leaving the Beto users nowhere to go as FileMaker simply doesn't do what Bento did and it doesn't open Bento files.

Even with Final Cut Pro, after quite a wait it is nowhere near this concocted 99.99%

You may just be fooling around with software, or even throwing a spanner in the works for something you don't even use (like some here), but others need to get work done and have vital files in Pages.

Are you just an Apple stooge running a black ops for the corporation? What otherwise is your motivation?

    Peter

"Reinstated up to 99.9%" is just another way of saying "did not entirely reinstate."   Same meaning.

"99.9%"  without the "up to" in front of it is your number not mine.

Peter,   How do you get Tabbed Finder and Tagging in Snow Leopard?  Are you saying you can get these in Snow Leopard?  Guess I'm confused.  Could you clarify?

If it's not doing that anymore, then is it trying to behave like an iPhone?  You know most text in lower case letters, hardly using Caps.

    Seems like more "dumbing-down."

No, iOS automatically captializes the first character in a new sentence, has for a very long time... its autocorrect is really quite intelligent while OS X's is lagging behind. Interesting Pages used to autocapitalize the first word in a sentence at all. I filed a report with Apple to bring autocapitalizing of each new sentence to all apps on OS X, well besides where it doesn't make sense like in Terminal.

Remember folks, complainig here won't do any good, but filing you feedback to Apple will. It's great we have a list being compiled - I've filed several reports so far I otherwise wouldn't have discovered on my own for a while. With enough feedback, they'll bring back a lot of features in future releases.

Also wanted to say, check out iCloud.com to see if the changed/removed features still behave as you expect there. For example, there are still alignment guides on iCloud.com.

Big difference in meaning and I really object to you putting those words into my mouth.

These major changes that a lot of Users are now facing are not trivial and I can see no real reason for them. Especially as Apple has a whole lot more important things to fix.

I am becoming aware that where once I could run a studio of Macs with only minor maintenance I am being taken off my real work to constantly fight fires started by Apple.

Besides the fire fighting a lot of my thinking is having to go into trying to follow hidden processes and diversions and weirdness that cuts into my productivity.

Again I question your motivation in sweeping real issues under the carpet.

I have to disagree in one point what people wrote here: textbox linking is still possible but it works not the same way as in Pages ’09.

Here's an article I wrote about textbox linking in Pages 5.0 (sorry: in German):

    http://www.ratschlag24.com/pages-5.0-textfelder-miteinander-verknuepfen

Intersting read. It seems to be a different feature, more like masking. Text flows from one box to the next, but once you have "joined" them, they merge into one singe new shape that you can't separate any more. Meaning you can't move, resize or delete one of those boxes.

But, cool new feature for whom it is useful.

This text-box linking only works within a single page, or at least I haven't managed to make it continue a column (in a newsletter) on a later page. For what it is worth (for those who do not read German): 1. create two text-boxes; 2. select both of them; 3. in the Format/Arrange side-bar (bottom), click on the "Unite" button.

XtraFinder (free) gives you excellent tabs, much better than Maverick, and available with a logical command t just like in Safari. It also lets you split windows horizontally and vertically, keep folders at the top of the window and more.

TagIt (free) lets you tag whatever you want and sort accordingly.

That allows shaped textboxes but not Text Linking which spans unconnected textboxes and is essential to most layout work.

I just opened Pages for the first time since updating to the most recent version it this morning.

All of the text options are on the right side now, instead of neatly at the top like before (e.g. font, alignment and spacing). Is there any way to move all of those things back where they were?

    Peter;

Please do not forget pasting/inserting images/shapes into textboxes so that a caption can be added to an illustration. This is crucial to the books I write.

    Thanks

That seems to be the new interface. You see the Inspector contextually.

    Cosmo

Are you saying you can't paste objects into Textboxes in Pages 5?

    Tristan

Can you Unite Shapes as well as Textboxes now?

    Everybody

I am still working blind. The local Apple Store, adamantly stated they would have both Mavericks and the new Pages 5 installed yesterday, but still hasn't done it and made some mumbly excuses about the "Geniuses" which I couldn't quite catch.

My ISP still has me shaped for another 3 days and I need to get another external hard drive to install Mavericks and the software on. So please provide screensnaps and good detailed descriptions of changes and problems so we can all better follow them.

Thanks everybody who has contributed to or followed this unfolding saga!

I agree; my response was to Uelef, who suggested the method as a new implementation of textbox linking. I just wasn't sure whether the "Unite" could perhaps somehow be made to unite textboxes on different pages. If it could, the functionality would be similar to the text linking accross otherwise unconnected boxes. (The "Union" operation does also unite disconnected/non-contiguous boxes, as long as they are on the same page, as best as I can tell.)

First you put words in my mouth.  Second there is no difference in meaning.

Third, no one is facing any changes.  I fully expect those who don't want reduced functionality will continue working with what they were working with before the announcement.

No one is sweeping any issues under the carpet.

I just reflected on the overreaction that seems fairly common any change is implemented and that this smells similar to what happened with iM and FCX.  And that no one lost anything here.  Nothing was destroyed.

Have a little perspective is all I said.

Does it let you take two (or more) Shapes such as a Star and a Circle and unite them or cut a piece out of each other as the icons seem to suggest?

What words did I put in your mouth?

And yes there is a big difference. Your 99.99% is as near as makes no difference when that is clearly not true.

A huge part of what Pages '09 was capable of has been removed from Pages 5.

I'm an old hand at computers and the "you don't really have to change" doesn't fool me one jot. People have already been caught with documents that were irrevocably changed for the worse and this is only day 3 of the change.

Progressively Apple will make maintaining your productivity more and more painful or impossible. I gave up a decade ago on Font Management for example, and as I said before haven't been able to get at my tax records for almost as long. That cost me serious money

These are not minor or avoidable changes. They seriously impact on people's work, income and obligations.

    Peter
