Q: Pages 5 features checklist

As you go through the new Pages 5 can you please add an added, missing or altered features here please.

I will start with some culled from the general discussions and if you could correct any errors add them:

Added

1. Right to Left text ie Arabic, Farsi & Hebrew. Uncertain about Pashtu

2. Single model templates. You turn off document text to get rid of the default. Not sure if this then can be mixed and matched with Word Processing templates

3. Able to share outside iCloud

Missing

1. Selecting non-contiguous text gone

2. Outline view appears gone

3. Customizable Toolbar is gone

4. Many templates appear gone

5. Captured pages gone

6. Reorganize pages by dragging gone

7. Duplicate pages gone

8. Subscript/superscript buttons gone

9. Select all instances of a Style is gone

10. Retain zoom level of document gone

11. Facing pages gone

12. Endnotes gone

13. Media Inspector can't find iPhoto library on external drive

14. Update is missing for older installations, Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on the ir Support Download site

Altered

1. Language set under Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar now document wide

2. Subscript/superscript text is now a convoluted route Gear > Advanced options > Baseline > Subscript/Superscript

3. Header appears to be multi-column

4. New file format (but still .pages?) not backwardly compatible

5. Page numbering method changed

6. T.O.C. appears buggy

7. Template file storage location moved - to where?

8. Imported older .pages files are not translating properly

9. Text language is detected automatically now

Letting you know I can't test or verify any of these as I haven't got Mavericks yet.

Thanks for writing these missing elemnents from Pages 5.0

here is one item missing at least I did not see on any of the posts.

Comments has been enhanced actually I think a feature of Comments has been removed. No longer can you see all comments in the side margins in order to see a comment you have to move your cursor over the highlighted word, this is a huge problem for me as a teacaher, now I have to control the keyboard to see comments, before I would just glance at my screen to see the comments.

Bring, "view all comments in side margin back"

Thanks for compiling the list, Peter.

A question: On the updated version, moving/copying pages in the side bar has been crossed through; can the pages be manipulated in the side bar? ......am I missing something?

To echo the general sentiment on this thread, I too am very disappointed with this version of Pages (.....perhaps Apple understood why they should not charge for it ! )

I have upgraded to Mavericks with my old iMac (2007).

When reading this thread I'm happy to see that my iMac doesn't upgrade to Pages 13 directly! Usually I always pay for my software (all my computers I had/have Amiga, Psion, Apple, Mac…). But I won't pay for the kiddy version of iWork.

No wonder, it's free! Such a crippled version is used by other developpers as a demo version.

It's completely useless to me. As a teacher I rely on DTP apps and always used the heavyweight PageStream on my Amiga to design piles of papers for my students. Then I swicthed to Pages 08 (Keynote and Numbers) to replace PageStream, though iWork was already then missing real DTP functions I was spoiled with PageStream. I never used a Microsoft OS or programm privately.

Version 09 of Pages helped a lot especially as it worked with MathType.

But this isn't true anymore with the latest version!

The same goes for Keynote: it's easy to set up a presentation in 15 minutes or even complex 200 frames ones with special effects. But the new version is just a joke. All key features are gone.

Numbers was enough for me and not as blouted as Excel (though it was the only MS programm I only crashed once).

Either Apple is blinded by Carl Icahn's (or is this "I can…") propousal to get most out of Apple Cashpot, or Apple has lost it's mind and is going iPad Pro (13") next year and completely giving up OSX and Mac. (see Macbook Air, Mac mini, Mac Pro … iPad Air, iPad Mini, iPad Pro).

Mavericks will be completely iOS, Macbooks will be 64 bit A9 GPUs running all iPad apps.

With the new Mavericks Safari I've lost already digital signature, online banking, access to administrative computers and databases. (I had to swicth to Firefox).

I think Apple will go for everybody for easy going. But this way they will cripple the creativity too!

This reminds me of all the beautifull kitchens designed by architects and designers. They look wonderful but of no use in real life, as these designers never used their architectured kitchens themselves.

My Macbook with stay with OSX 10.8 and iWork 08 and 09.

    Sorry Apple.

I agree.  Pages' approach to comments (and tracked changes) in the side column was the best I'd seen on any word processor on any platform, and the main reason I use Pages when I need to collaborate with colleagues using Word.

I hear people saying "why didn't Apple learn from FCPX?"  The better question is "why didn't the user base learn from FCPX?"  Apple had in FCP a bloated piece of very capable software.  iWork was becoming equally so.  Look no further than Office for a great example of where it would have gone on the track to "power user land".  However, FCPX has now recovered and exceeded the capabilities of its predecessor. It was necessary to take two steps back in order to take three forward.  The same thing applies to iWork.  Everyone is welcome to not upgrade during the transition.  But fear not, it's only temporary.  Apple is most certainly backing the Mac version up a few steps to align with the iOS version, since there was probably no way to bring that up to par in the same direction.  Now they'll evolve together.

Our job as users is to nicely and politely offer feedback and tell Apple what we want.  Don't be rude.  Writing software is extremely difficult.

    Dear cyberhusky69

......as an architect, I try to design beautiful kitchens that are practical, efficient, & long lasting: A quality I perceive in Apples' products (but not the latest iteration of Pages...).

Don't worry, no offence taken.......although your comparison did generate a sardonic smile !

I agree, there are a LOT of important features that have been stripped from Pages, Keynote, iMovie.  These are definitely not improvements.  This is the FIRST time I have ever been unhappy with an Apple upgrade.  I do like Mavericks, but the new apps have all the look and feel of the minimized feature IOS counterparts.  This is not good.

For people, who use those products for serious work, this is a definite issue.  For those who use the products on their IOS devices for entertainment and light work, then they may be fine.

Please, Apple...Do forget the hardcore OS X base that is out here.  We use your products for work and making a living!

Another feature missing from Pages...The ability to adjust the spacing after a paragraph.  Why would such basic features be stripped?

    Hi RedDuke

I'm aware that there are practical thinking designers and architects, I'm happy the one planning my house, saved me from a lot of not needed expenditures :-)

My idea was that thinking practically isn't enough, having the practical experience is the key. I think this experience Apple has lost with the new iWork!

I don't think this is missing. If you click on the little triangle next to 'Spacing' in the Style tab of the new inspector, you get all of the options of spacing before and after a paragraph.

Just send my opinion about iWork (Pages) to Apple. Are they kidding me "We appreciate your assistance in making Pages better." But this doesn't count for the actual version :-)

I was very close to upgrade mine until I found this thread. Endnotes feature missing, I can still live with that, some programs like Papers offer Magic Manuscript function.

However, there has been a glaring omission in Pages that I hope would be added in the new version:

    Automatic figure captioning/numbering.

Can anyone confirm whether this function is in the new Pages ? If Apple did not add this, I think it should not claim that its softwares are suitable for students. Dumbing down softwares create an ecosystem where students make documents that don't go along with standard practice.
