Q: Pages 5 features checklist

As you go through the new Pages 5 can you please add an added, missing or altered features here please.

I will start with some culled from the general discussions and if you could correct any errors add them:

Added

1. Right to Left text ie Arabic, Farsi & Hebrew. Uncertain about Pashtu

2. Single model templates. You turn off document text to get rid of the default. Not sure if this then can be mixed and matched with Word Processing templates

3. Able to share outside iCloud

Missing

1. Selecting non-contiguous text gone

2. Outline view appears gone

3. Customizable Toolbar is gone

4. Many templates appear gone

5. Captured pages gone

6. Reorganize pages by dragging gone

7. Duplicate pages gone

8. Subscript/superscript buttons gone

9. Select all instances of a Style is gone

10. Retain zoom level of document gone

11. Facing pages gone

12. Endnotes gone

13. Media Inspector can't find iPhoto library on external drive

14. Update is missing for older installations, Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on the ir Support Download site

Altered

1. Language set under Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar now document wide

2. Subscript/superscript text is now a convoluted route Gear > Advanced options > Baseline > Subscript/Superscript

3. Header appears to be multi-column

4. New file format (but still .pages?) not backwardly compatible

5. Page numbering method changed

6. T.O.C. appears buggy

7. Template file storage location moved - to where?

8. Imported older .pages files are not translating properly

9. Text language is detected automatically now

Letting you know I can't test or verify any of these as I haven't got Mavericks yet.

Greetings, everyone! Concerning the latest update for Pages, I can't seem to find the symbols browser anymore in the menu options. Is that missing or is it buried somewhere in a new location? Thank you very much for your time!

This is an excellent and useful effort. Eventually, this should be shared with Apple. We should not assume that they are monitoring this forum closely enough.

Although I'm sure that Apple consciously dropped features in order to effect a common experience across desktop, web and mobile, I am equally certain that they are committed to restoring those functions ASAP.

Our ability to articulate just what we think is most important will be a guiding light to Apple. It will be appreciated.

Thus, I propose that, once we complete the list, we find ways to indicate which of those items are most important to us.  Perhaps someone who is conversant with one of those online survey systems could arrange something that will do that.

    Welcome to the Forum, Jeanne!

See the bottom of the Edit menu, "Special Characters…" (Control-Command-Space, by default).

Another feature missing from Pages...The ability to adjust the spacing after a paragraph.  Why would such basic features be stripped?

It is still there, just look under the Text settings.

*** - I can no longer paste an image into a textbox or table, which is a crucial feature.

You are correct: no images into textboxes or tables.

However, the first problem at least has a workaround: Put the textbox under/over/next to the image, then group them. Pages 5.0 will treat the group as an image: single-click on the group (anyhere non-transparent) and click the "Format" brush in the toolbar to adjust the appearance of the group. Double-click on any non-transparent part of the image, and manipulate the image within the group; double-click on the text, and manipulate the text within the group.

Thanks for compiling the list, Peter.

A question: On the updated version, moving/copying pages in the side bar has been crossed through; can the pages be manipulated in the side bar? ......am I missing something?

To echo the general sentiment on this thread, I too am very disappointed with this version of Pages (.....perhaps Apple understood why they should not charge for it ! )

As the list grew longer and the bold subheads harder to spot, I introduced a line by line indication.

+ Next to an item means it has been Added as a feature.

Crossed through means that it has been Removed as a feature.

↪ Means it has been Altered.

I will submit this to Apple when I have a chance to check out every single item.

I shall try and make it as accurate as I can humanly make it and accompany it with a case for retaining Pages '09 or better still making it or iBooks Author a new level of Pro Office suite.

Will this move Apple from its long term course of converting its customer base to iOS by stealth? I doubt I have the persuasive powers to change Apple's long term strategic vision. All I hope is that I can delay it a bit longer to give us all a chance to find an alternative.

As Apple moves away from us, having thrown us overboard, we need to move away from Apple and find something else that will serve us well. Linux anyone?

They also removed the ability to insert a table into the header/footer of the document.

And the storyboard template is also gone too!

@linda2009:  Sorry to reply so late to your question about Mtn. Lion vs. Snow Leopard.

Saving in the background:  It didn't like it at first but have gotten used to it.  As far as using disk space, I don't think it does.  I'm not qualified to provide and technical details, and I have a 740GB fusion drive that has still 360GB available, so i dont worry about slices of disk space here and there.  I haven't read anything about Mav being any different from Mtn Lion.

Upgrading from Snow Leo to Mtn Lion might be worth it if you're interested in trying the features introduced in Lion, Mtn Lion and Mav.  You might feel like staying where you are as long as your daily apps and workflow still work well for you.  My wife's still on Snow Leo as it does everything she needs it to do.  OTOH I like to upgrade and try new things out, so I've upgraded through the years.

One idea that might help you decide is to get a cheap 500MB hard drive, install Mav on it, then migrate your current user data to it through the Migration Assistant. Try it out for a few days and see how it goes.  If you like it, then boot back into your Snow Leo drive, make a backup, and then install Mav over it.  If, after working with it for a while, you decide it isn't your cup of tea, clone your backed up Snow Leo to your oviginal boot drive.

…and be prepared to spend enormous hours trying to untangle multiple threads of emails, photos, Tunes, files etc. not to mention the later versions of files that will no longer open in an older system.

Oh, and wonder what happened to all that stuff you remember having but can't quite work out where it is…

Noticed a little while ago that the bottom status bar is gone. There's an option to show word count, but nothing to show other info (and the word count box is ugly). I often like to know how many pages I've written yet I'm not sure how to do that now other than opening the page thumbnails and scrolling to the bottom. That takes up lots more real estate and is a lot less useful than the status bar at the bottom. The change has made the interface more complicated, not less.

Also, I don't think I mentioned earlier but I can't get paste-and-match-style to work. Used to be cmd-shift-V. Now the keyboard shortcut is cmd-shift-option-V, requiring contortionist fingers to work and it doesn't even work. I haven't yet gotten something to properly paste using the target style.

I never use tables myself, but in testing this it seems that I can drag drop .jpg, etc images from my desktop into table cells ok.  Am I missing the point of this problem?
