Q: Pages 5 features checklist

As you go through the new Pages 5 can you please add an added, missing or altered features here please.

I will start with some culled from the general discussions and if you could correct any errors add them:

Added

1. Right to Left text ie Arabic, Farsi & Hebrew. Uncertain about Pashtu

2. Single model templates. You turn off document text to get rid of the default. Not sure if this then can be mixed and matched with Word Processing templates

3. Able to share outside iCloud

Missing

1. Selecting non-contiguous text gone

2. Outline view appears gone

3. Customizable Toolbar is gone

4. Many templates appear gone

5. Captured pages gone

6. Reorganize pages by dragging gone

7. Duplicate pages gone

8. Subscript/superscript buttons gone

9. Select all instances of a Style is gone

10. Retain zoom level of document gone

11. Facing pages gone

12. Endnotes gone

13. Media Inspector can't find iPhoto library on external drive

14. Update is missing for older installations, Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on the ir Support Download site

Altered

1. Language set under Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar now document wide

2. Subscript/superscript text is now a convoluted route Gear > Advanced options > Baseline > Subscript/Superscript

3. Header appears to be multi-column

4. New file format (but still .pages?) not backwardly compatible

5. Page numbering method changed

6. T.O.C. appears buggy

7. Template file storage location moved - to where?

8. Imported older .pages files are not translating properly

9. Text language is detected automatically now

Letting you know I can't test or verify any of these as I haven't got Mavericks yet.

I pulled up a document I've edited several times in the last 2 weeks and it appeared to have its versions. Look under the File menu for Revert to. Mavs has changed how we revert.

Also can't drag & drop contacts from Addressbook to fill in Name and Address fields any more.

The new Pages is a drastic stripped down version. In fact it is a downgrade.

I'm glad I didn't remove Pages '09 since I need those features removed on a daily basis. Very, very disapointed.

    Carlos,

Good point to check out. Anyone with a history that they want to preserve should create a Duplicate in Pages '09 for use with Pages 3.0.

Then you could go back with Pages '09 to look at the Versions of the original document.

I'm a heavy Pages user, and have used it to create presentations / brochures / templates etc. I use it daily with my work. in fact, I started creating templates for pro users as a business opportunity. I really looked forward to the new Pages version. After I saw the keynote, I said to a friend: I really hope they didn't remove functions from it.

They (Apple) have crippled Pages for any serious work - for most work really. While it's cool that you can use the application on multiple platforms, I would rather have missed that in retun for the features that have now been removed.

    What I've found so far:

Can't delete pages in a document

Can't rearrange pages in a document

Can't insert pages (copy or from the menu Insert -> Pages)

Can't link text fields (text boxes)

Overall, these missing features makes it impossible for me, and I believe many others to use it for any serious work. I hope Apple will fix those missing features in an update soon. I hope Apple HAD to release now for some unknow reason, and WILL implement those missing features down the road, but for now, Pages in it's curent release is not for the professional IMO.

Pages lite, as I am now calling it, may be a boon for some users. I have had many people find it too daunting. For me, I groaned at each missing features because I use most of them and like them. Alignment lines gone? Nooooo!

I like the idea of getting rid of the inspector and putting an action aware menu on the side. There was always a ton of unused space there, especially on big monitors. Other than that, this is a dumbed down version of a fantastic program.

It was clever how they hid the layout feature. Not a bad idea. Most users use the word processor only and will do layout from a word processor type model. This would allow the layout mavens to do their stuff but keep the program from becoming confusing to beginners.

Some good ideas. Maybe there could be a light and advanced version. Most consumers would be totally happy with this new version.

Yes, same for me. I just checked and I have version information going back at least a year. Thank goodness -- that would have been annoying to lose.

You can't have tables in the headers/footers.  A huge blow to those that used pages for business where the header and footer contained business information that needed to be repeated on each page.  Not only that- have fun trying to figure out mail merge.  This is a horrible attempt at moving forward.

There seems to be a lot of reference to people waiting for Apple to fix these things. These things are not some overlooked glitch, or a programming problem. These changes are a fundamental direction change from professional to mom and pop make a letter to their kids. They wanted compatability with the ios versions, and rather than improving ios versions, they reduced the mac version down to the standard of the ios version.

While you may see the odd feature return, this is a fundamental change in how they see the product. As the product is now free, it is not like they are going to see a revenue decline from unhappy users.

I tried to use the Open With = Pages 4.3 (Change ALL) feature in finder, and it automatically keeps it as Pages 5.0.  I don't want to delete it because I want to play around with it more, but don't want to accidentially open files in 5.0 because then they are unreadable in the old version.  Not sure what this is about.

One feature I use a lot and that seems missing is text to table or table to text.

True, but Apple did the same thing with FCP X.  The backlash caused them to re impliment features at a rapid pace.

OK, the new Pages and Keynote are both disasters for me.  I've gone back to using the older versions.  Thank goodness they still function.

Unfortunately, the "Open With" option for my files won't stick and they all continue to open with the new versions.  I don't want to delete the new iWork apps in case they get fixed sometime soon.  However, I don't want to accidentally open my files with the new versions by double clicking on them.

If I delete the new iWork apps, can I still get them back?

Any way to quarantine them so they won't launch when I try to open a file?  Maybe change the name or .zip them?

Never mind.  Found it as dWb said on the file menu under revert.  Do any of you know how to make background objects selectable?  Feature has been removed.  https://discussions.apple.com/message/23480594#23480594

Select one of your pages document in the finder.  Ctrl-I to get information.  You'll see an <open with>. Select Pages 09. Select open all files with this application.  Presto.
