Q: Pages 5 features checklist

Simply put, Peter is doing his best to give everyone some insight into what has occurred.  I am one of those that upgraded to Pages 5- saw what happened- copied those files that I opened with Pages 5 and reverted them back to Pages 09.  I quickly deleted Pages 5 for the following reasons:

• Too complex a UI to get anything done.
• No more floating inspector-
• No more images in the header/footers
• Inability to "save as" and keep the files in the format in which they were originally designed.
• Poor layout options
• No need to do 'real' work on an iPad, iPhone, iPod
• And many, many more.

Peter has given everyone and opportunity to review the adds/deletes of the new Pages 5.  What he has done is something Apple should have done- given everyone the ins-and-outs of the new functionality.  For those that are criticizing Peter, you are one of two things:

• A disgruntled Apple fan boy that, regardless of the degree of which Apple destroys systems, will always claim "Apple's the best."  For many, Apple could sell them an iPhone that is purple without any other changes, raise the price $50.00 and they'd be on here spouting how wonderful the new functionality is. There is no new functionality- it's purple.  That's it.  It's crazy- very cult like. 
• A developer that played some part in the development of Page 5.  In which case, I'd be defending my position as well as the very real possibility of being fired for this comes to light.  Better defend it- there's no excuse. 

Anyway, Peter has done a great job.  Most other blogs/reviews even link back to his post regarding functionality.  If some of these things turn out to be true or untrue- the fact remains, those that have a workflow within their daily work activities using Page 09 have been hamstrung.  Nobody should have to search and reinvent workflows based on an 'update'.  Successful implementation has minimal impact on users.  Failure results in wholesale changes and angry users.  

I have been an avid iWork user for 11 years.  I also have Microsoft.  Hate it.   But it appears that Apple is taking a few "pages" from the Microsoft playbook.   Not good- not good at all.  It was supposed to be the defining difference between the two giants.

I've sorted out the Pages 5 Pages 09 dilemma

I stopped using iWork 5 alltogether! Removed it from my iPhone/iPad. Reinstalled the previous versions from my backup.

Fortunately Mavericks didn't upgrade iWork to iWork 5.

Reinstalled iBook Author from backup.(until embedded fonts are back in a new version).

Turned OFF auto-update both on iMac and iPhone / iPad. I want to decide which app I want!

Apple should Pages 5 to Pages lite, so we would have been warned!

I really hope all the missing functions will come back to Pages 5. If not I will try to find anotehr DTP app.

Nobody is criticizing Peter's effort to put together a list.  Barvo, Peter.  Bravo.

I'm criticizing his unnecessary presumptive (he hasn't even used it yet!) badmouthing of a company and developers who generally do a better job at providing the tools we need and listening to customers than anyone else in the industry.  That's not fanboyism - just a simple fact.  So they (not me - I'm not one of them) deserve a little credit for their efforts and some respect from users. They don't deserve to be trash talked as Peter and several others have done.  There's a respectful, mature way to leave feedback.  Children cry and complain before trying something.  Adults are expected to behave better.

(btw "Fanboy"? really?  you're still using that word around the office?)

• I'm so fortunate that I did not install Pages 5.
  
• I agree with [most] the Super-Users of Pages.  This is not Pages and it's a software-nightmare.
  
• This is not how most office/productive software gets released.  They do betas, let the super-users test and test. AND, when they release it they usually provide you with a Change-Log so you can review and install at your own risk.
  
• I use Pages and Numbers everyday; I have gigs of files.  I can't imagine having to repair all that.
  
• Dang I wish there was a "DO NOT LIKE" button [forum].
  

I did not even install Mavs; I downloaded it... sucked in by the "Free."  Whenever something (across the board) is for free, then you hear people say things like, "you can't complain, it was free."

Anyway, that's it.  Keep up the good work.  I only have a small ray of hope that Apple will do anything about it.

robogobo could you please stop this crusade? It is really boring to read and definitely not helping. You are talking of being mature. If you were you had stopped long ago! So please refrain from answering and venting your views and instead help to find out about the new Pages and contribute to the list.

There are people who are subscribed to this thread to get actual information - please don't clutter it up with bickering.  Is it too much to ask - if you're not actually reporting a feature (added, missing or changed), please post your invective/commentary in another thread.

Feel free to skip over my comments if you don't want to read them. But if someone addresses me I'm probably going to reply. That's how this works. Ok?

"Fanboy" as stated is a common reference to the fans of Apple- whether I like it or not, it is common term for those that can see no wrong in what Apple does or does not do.  Trust me, I am a fan of Apple products but when I see crap- I call it such.  "Fanboys" don't see it as such.  Developer or not- this release is crap.  We all know that.  iWork Beta was better than this.  If a developer were to come on here and defend their position, that would be great.  However, I assume that they too agree that this release is less than stellar.  It may not be their fault- rather the fault of the superiors, but in all reality- even as an entry-level subordinate, a responsible developer should have run this disaster up the flagpole to the bosses.  By no means am I critiquing the developers.  I predict that there were way too many involved in this to say that any particular group is solely responsible.  But if your development groups act in a silo- then must come together at release time-they should have a fairly good understanding of what the right hand is doing.  It doesn't appear that is has happened.  It seems rushed and forced upon the customers- not at Apple's expense but the users. 

Now I can be a condescending putz but I'll save that for others.

Well said, noaliase. I do use Microsoft Office for Mac and Windows, but was trending to Pages. The program was developing nicely and I was sure that it would become a viable option to Word. I used to do a Journal on Pages and was considering moving back when this "update" came out.

I thank Peter for the effort put in this thread trying to make sense of it all. It was this forum that alerted me to the perils of updating iWork when I was checking program compatibility with Mavericks. I am forewarned.

Well...to summarize, I was dragged kicking and screaming into iTunes 11 after battling upgrading for a whole year. I have iOS7 and don't know if I could revert back to iOS6. It is the synching with iTunes that forced my hand; I could not use iTunes 10.7 with iOS7 and eventually and reluctantly moved to iTunes 11. I chose to upgrade, but I did so under protest.

The list of destroyed applications grows each year. It all started with iMovie, then Final Cut Pro (the only one that has improved, but its credibility is damaged), iTunes, iOS, and now iWork. Let me just say that reading up on FCP X's current status on bringing back professional clients is great, but "bitten once, twice shy". I am becoming wary of Apple. I am sure I will like Mavericks, but don't know if I want to become too familiar with it in case Apple decides to destroy OS X as well.

I used to be an Apple fanboy. I loved the "wow factor" each year would bring, but there hasn't been much to "wow" about lately. Yes I was impressed with the hardware introduced at the recent Apple event, but the software seems to be taking a bad turn. What good is advanced hardware when you have crappy software? Apple, I did not moan when OS9 was laid to rest in place of OS X. I was faithful through the software upgrades when the Intel chip replaced the PPC. I've been there through it all. But this constant mangling of software is abusive to the faithful fan base.

I've left several Feedback posts that (politely) asked for Feature Requests but as I said in the iTunes 11 forum, I feel like I am beating my head against a very high and thick brick wall. No one at Apple seems to be listening, most of all the executive heads.

1. Show Layout doesn't show my printers non-printable margins anymore

2. I repeat that the pull out guide lines doesn't exist  anymore

3. It seems you can't rotate tables anymore

3 b. Can't rotate objects.

4. You can still create new Styles, list, character and paragraph. The Inspector just shows it differently

5. Inline object is now called Inline with text in the text wrap option

6. Documents start at 125% zoom. There isn't any preference option that can change that but you can change it in the specific document and then save
