Q: I can't open Maps, iBooks, or the App Store on my Mac

I just installed OS X 10.9 Mavericks on my Mac (specs below). The install went fairly smoothly with no hiccups. After installing, I ran CleanMyMac, which cleared my cache, language files, etc. I've run this program millions of times before with no problems.

I've now discovered that I cannot open Maps, iBooks, or the App Store on my Mac. I can open and run iTunes, but when prompted by iTunes to update to the latest version, I click 'OK' and see no response (i.e., the App Store does not open).

Can anyone provide any guidance?

2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

4GB RAM

750GB 7200RPM HDD

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2009), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I have this problem, too. I runned "clean my mac" after installation of mavericks successfully because my other applications run slow. After runned clean my mac and restarted my computer, some of applications cannot bounce up normally, such as ibooks, app store, maps and calendars. The icons are still exist in the dock and I can click on it, however, there is no light under these icons.

Below is the detailed information about my macbook pro:

    OS X version 10.9.

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

    Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

I am really appreicated if anyone can solve my problem. I was really enjoyed the pleasure that Mavericks brought to me this morning. Unfortunately, it turns out the joyful time did not last.

I'm having the same problem too on my 15" rMBP. Right after installing OS X Mavericks, I ran Monolingual to get rid of other languages than English and also Disk Diet in order to clean caches, etc. but now I'm unable to open Maps, App Store, iTunes and other Apple apps.

****, I shouldn't have done my "cleaning" ritual!

Yesterday was the first time I use the CleanMyMac and thanks it damaged my OS.

My solution was Reinstalling OS X

    How?

Restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities to restore OS X using OS X Recovery

Note: be sure that your Mac is connected to the Internet.

I did it today, it's finally working without any loss!

Thanks guys. Did just this. Did not use CleanMyMac.

Holding down Command + R during startup and then clicking "Reinstall OS X" solved my problem.

I suspect that CleanMyMac is removing core files. Until it gets updated, I wouldn't use it.

    Thanks a lot.

UPDATE: CleanMyMac just notified me that it is not compatible with Mavericks, but that CleanMyMac 2 *is* compatible. I was automatically directed to download CMM2. Try this if you still have the itch to clean your mac.

You should always back up. But, in theory, you should be able to upgrade without backing up and losing everything.

But really, you should back up your data.

In my case, I am using Clean My Mac 2, and on using it to clean my mac, i ended up with Mac that is no longer get stuck on the Apple Logo with a few garbled stuff on the upper left of the screen.

Not till udpated, I would suggest to go hands off it. :/

I have done the exact same thing.  Is there anyway to undo the damage caused without re-installing/restoring?

My backup in 250 miles away which is quite gauling.  It seems crazy that the only solution is a complete restore.

    Fingers crossed there is...

To my knowledge, a complete restore/reinstall is the only thing that works. However, I didn't have to rely on a backup to restore my data. My data was still preserved. I'd suggest backing up your most important files on a thumb drive or in the cloud just to be safe.

Also, for anyone else who's interested -- I recently upgraded to CleanMyMac 2 (which is supposed to be Mavericks compliant) and have noticed no problems on that front. All of my programs work just fine. Anyone else having problems?

Yeah, I guess I wish I read this last night. I used "Clean My Mac" also, leanred the hard way. Slew of Apple Apps are fried (Maps, Message, Preview, text) ugh. Just backed up a bunch of files, off to "recovery!"

Thanks for posting, wish me luck...I hope this helps.

*Yep, totally stay away from Clarn My Mac - I wish this program simply didnt open on Mavericks in the first place, apparently Clean My Mac 2 works on Mavericks from the programs message board I read.

Had to reinstall Mavericks, in total it took about an hour..including the OS 10.9.3 update, few other updates, a needed Time Machine backup.

But it completely fixed the problem. No loss of data. Clean My Mac has been uninstalled.
