Mavericks Mail App and Gmail folders

Even turning off ALL mail? Not sure.

My Mac Mail inbox is still the same after update.

Especially having 30GB of emails makes all operations with it complicated, takes days to redownload if you try different things 😟

I thought that we were supposed to have All Main Checked? Per these articles:

The current issue that I'm having is that when I switch folders, for example, from Sent to Inbox... It takes over 10 seconds before my emails are vissible! It's really difficult to work this way!

I was still having issues after the update, as my gmail account was not synching on a consistent basis . It was also driving me crazy that when I deleted an email on my iphone or ipad and instead of going to trash it was archived. I reviewed potential solutions and other applications I could purchase. In the end I decided to migrate all my gmail account info into Icloud.

I now have my gmail forwarding to Icloud. I spent about an hour migrating everything to Icloud. So far this seems like a good solution. I created folders for each desired gmail folder in icloud and copied over all the messages, which took most the time. I migrated all gmail contacts and calendar entries in to Icloud as well. I have used gmail for quite some time and never had any reason to swtich until I starting have all these issues after upgrading to Mavericks. I do like the Icloud web interface as well. Any way this might be a solution for those of that are tired of dealing with compatability issues between Gmail and Mac Mail.

Since I don't want this "All Mail" feature on my devices I simply don't use it (see my set up in the post above). I collect all my mail that I receive in the inbox. And I take it from there. No "Important" folder. I just flag it if it is important and remove the flag if it no longer is. Also, I sort with smart folders when needed. This works well for me - as I said no more issues - it may not suit others.

After the update I was having trouble with the Inbox. Finally out of despeartion I deleted and re-created my account locally and the inbox worked... at least for a moment ... that is new email appeared and I could see it till I switched to Mail.app and then it was gone.

Suspecting that Mail really was downloading the messages (they are showing in All Messages after all) I decided to uninstall MailTags and presto all is well again.

After the update, still having huge trouble. For me to delete / recreate would take ages, as I have 30 GB of email. ANYONE ELSE WITH 30 GB that has succesfully solved this? Please help, this is starting to be desperate.

I really wish I could downgrade back to the last version of MAC, this is a DISASTER.

What are mailtags? I dont think I even have this.

Also the icons like "responded" are not syncing well even back to Google... This is very frustrating, as I dont see what I have replied for example from my iPhone.

Do not try to use app email to archive at this time. I had seen other posts regarding users having large email accounts with Gmail... So i considered that my issues was to export (download to my hard drive and store in my server) old emails.

Well, I just lost one year worth of emails, 2012 completely gone! Hopefully there are no law suits coming my way!

I suggest making a label in Gmail for your older emails... then don't show that label the mail app, this will reduce the syncing required. If you need an old email then just use gmail to get to it... at least till they fix this.

Also don't use Mail app to move your mail around, this is how i lost my 2012 emails, they looked like they were moved and then I ended up exporting an empty mailbox and it feels that my mail is now in limbo...

Wow, that is a little hard 🙂 I will try reducing the size, but I need at least 2013 + 2012 emails operational, which is most of that 30 GB... here are some good email management tricks from me:

But the problem is many of these tricks dont work properly without mac mail, Outlook just doesn't provide the speed Mac mail did.

The archiving / moving is also an essential functionality for me, which is the only one that seems to be working at this stage (I have a shortcut for moving to a dedicated archive folder, the folder must show in IMAP, or Mac Mail doesnt know how to move it there, and going back and forth seems senseless.

Apple made a great way how to downgrade email...

JanRezab... sorry i guess my idea above is not going to work since you'll still have the all mail folder in Mail app!

Oh dear, I've tried not to reply but this is now getting me too crazy!

GMail is a free service. Apple Mail as well is a free program. These programs are designed for casual users on personal computers.

Now I don't want to sound like I'm blaming the victims. I'm not. These tools are flawed and the companies that make them should work to fix them. But realistically, programs always have bugs. If you are going to use your GMail account and your Apple Mail program for something real and serious, you need to protect yourself.

It pains me to hear people say they've lost important data. And I'm sorry but I have to say this bluntly: You are the one responsible for backing up your data. There simply is no excuse to have gigabytes and gigabytes of important data (email or otherwise) sitting in only one place. Always back up important data. In fact, consider backing it up off-site.

I thought all was well with the latest update, but I just noticed I have some emails in the inbox that haven't shown up in Mail, and I've had Mail up and running for a couple of days since those emails showed up. So, sadly, it's back to Thunderbird for me.

Bark, thats totally not fair. I pay thousands of dollars for Google Apps each month. Careful. So I am paying both these companies. Mac Mail has worked perfectly fine for years, now it stopped. These are not just some bugs, these are essential Mailbox sync issues. The mailbox is almost ALWAYS out of sync. Right now I have 103 emails in Google Apps, and 106 emails with Mac Mail. I have no idea which 3 emails are extra in my mac mail, really.

I back up my Google Apps email into 4 different locations (+ probably the NSA), I would say its QUITE safe! I am complaining about usage, not the safeness of my data.

We just want a permanent fix or my gosh, allow us to back-downgrade at least Mail...
