Anyone else get locked out of their computer after turning on find my Mac?

Today after downloading Mavericks, I enabled find my Mac. Immediately afterwards, I received an email from iCloud saying that my MacBook had been locked. Now I can't access my computer and I've tried every possible lock combination.

Yes, I am having the same issue on my iMac.

I have contacted customer service several times, and the only options they give are to use a time capsule to boot your machine to a prior date (which I dont have) or to bring the computer into an apple store and have them unlock it.

This has to be some sort of glitch/bug with the OS install, and a pretty bad one considering it renders the computer useless. now I will have to make the 80mi trip to the nearest apple store to (HOPEFULLY) have my computer fixed.

Be sure to report your issue to the development team at apple.com/feedback hopefully they will address the problem soon.

From the OS X Mavericks forum:

You might face the same problem as a friend of mine... A while back he wanted to try the new locking feature of iOS7 and tried to lock his computer. At the time the feature was not supported by mac OS and it did nothing. He forgot about it. Trying to install Mavericks made this request active... and bricked his macbook pro rétina as he could not remember the code he used 😟

This is indeed possible in my case. Later akira44 reported that their friend went to the apple store, and one of the techs recoded the firmware and it was good to go, so it looks like that may be the best option.

I Am having exactly the same problem. After installing the Maverick update yesterday, the computer needed restarting. When it came back on it asked me to "enter your system lock PIN code to unlock this Mac" don't have a clue what there talking about. I've tried every password.

Called apple, their telling me to take it to an authorised apple shop to have it unlocked, free of charge apparently, however I am skeptical.

i brought my computer second hand from a computer shop. Don't know where the hand written receipt is.

am disappointed with Apple, they need to sort it out and stop upsetting customers.

I too have this problem after I downloaded mavericks. I spent 2 hours on the phone, then 3 hours in an apple store the following day only for a "genius" to tell me the computer was most likely stolen and now the person wants it back. Even though I've had the computer over a year, have the box, receipts, and accessories from the original owner. He couldn't even wipe the hard drive and reset it. Now I have a brick sitting on my desk and have to ask to use a friends computer for homework.

Ive been the orignal owner of the computer ..however i am skeptical as well for i dont have the receipt either. If anyone has actulay gone to the apple store with this problom would like to know what your outcomes were as well.

I just had the issue fixed for me, apple don't see it as a widespread issue after talking with the but if you are under warranty you won't have to pay, I luckily had the receipt to show it was mine but if you don't have it you might have had the receipt emailed to you if you bought it at an apple store.

My iMac was out of warranty so I had to pay £72 to get it fixed, it involved them taking the hard drive out to get a key and then the service provider contacted apple to finally unlock it. I'm not 100% sure they had to remove the hard drive but they did at the authorised shop I got it sorted at! thankfully they don't need to erase the hard drives data.

As i said earlier, I brought my Mac second hand. I managed to find the reciept. Booked an appointment with apple store in Bromley and they corrected the problem free of charge and my Mac is out of warranty. However, I had to wait in the store for a couple hours for the computer to finalise the Maverick install. I just explained to them that the problem occurred after updated to Macerick and they were really helpful.

I'm having the same issue. Bought the 27" iMac second hand and it locked itself after I upgraded to Marverick yesterday. I didn't even turn on the "Find My Mac" feature. Called Apple and spoke to senior specialist. He advised to use "cmd+R" when starting the Mac to wipe the harddrive, but even that require the passcode. So the only option left is a trip to Apple store and ask their support to wipe the hardrive, which is the least preferred option because not all the files were backed up and I will be ended up losing some of the them 😟.

I believe this is a bug so hope to voice it here. Unfortunatley I don't think we will be compensated by Apple as the first bunch of victims 😟 .

I've been in recent contact with Apple regarding this situation.

The representative for my case has been very helpful in explaining what he can, regarding the situation. Though, according to him, he does not have full access to the information from the engineers who have looked into the issue.

As best we understand, a lock sequence was initiated for my iMac in September of 2012, but did not take effect until "Find My Mac" was enabled after installing Mavericks.

Coincedently, iOS 6 was released in September of 2012...

I'd go so far as to speculate that devices registered in icloud under the iphone user's account may have been able to have a lock command initiated by the user, without the input of a passcode. I have yet to confirm this with apple, though.

Appledrop, Yes, this appears to be a bug, and likely there will be no compensation other then (hopefully) getting our computers back up and running sometime in the near future. I have an appt on wednesday to have my iMac fixed, so I will update with how that goes as soon as possible.

I have been told that for security purposes, the ONLY people authorized to do this are at the apple stores, so you MUST take your computer in to have it "fixed".

Complaining here wont bring much light on the subject unless a massive number of comsumers are ranting about it. your best bet is to email an apple representative, or submit a feedback form at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ as engineers do look at these.
