I've been in recent contact with Apple regarding this situation.
The representative for my case has been very helpful in explaining what he can, regarding the situation. Though, according to him, he does not have full access to the information from the engineers who have looked into the issue.
As best we understand, a lock sequence was initiated for my iMac in September of 2012, but did not take effect until "Find My Mac" was enabled after installing Mavericks.
Coincedently, iOS 6 was released in September of 2012...
I'd go so far as to speculate that devices registered in icloud under the iphone user's account may have been able to have a lock command initiated by the user, without the input of a passcode. I have yet to confirm this with apple, though.
Appledrop, Yes, this appears to be a bug, and likely there will be no compensation other then (hopefully) getting our computers back up and running sometime in the near future. I have an appt on wednesday to have my iMac fixed, so I will update with how that goes as soon as possible.
I have been told that for security purposes, the ONLY people authorized to do this are at the apple stores, so you MUST take your computer in to have it "fixed".
Complaining here wont bring much light on the subject unless a massive number of comsumers are ranting about it. your best bet is to email an apple representative, or submit a feedback form at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ as engineers do look at these.
