HA! I just ran into a similar problem and reverting works.
Open the file. Go to the File menu, in that menu, highlight "Revert to" and click on "Browse All Versions...".
Should have at least 2 versions on the right side. Click on the oldest one and Restore.
Once it is restored, close the file without saving. I just click on the red dot in the upper left corner.
Now, you can open the file again with the old Numbers. The old Numbers should still be on your system in the Applications folder in a folder called iWork '09. I noticed that the new Numbers is in Applications folder too, but not in a folder.
Maybe this is helpeful for some, but did not solved my problem. I have a full year budget/expenses in a file that now is stuck in the new version of Numbers. There is no older version.
Besides I need those categories fullly working. The filter is not the same. The old categories feature wasn't perfect (one cannot export the sums to other cells automatically) but did the job. In this new version can't figure out any feature similar.
Yes! Where are the Categories??? There has to be a way to do this (apart from reverting to an old version)!
Confused as to why there is no older version of the file available. Did you change computers or something?
The categories did return to fully working once I got the older version of the file into the older version of Numbers.
I have the same delima. I've got an important spreadsheet that simply does not work without Categories. Shocked that they are gone. I do have a backup of my file, but for me it does not open correctly under the old version of Numbers on Mavricks; it does open fine on another machine runnig 10.8. I guess I shouldn't have updgraded the OS? I'm beinging to wonder if the folks at Apple are spending a bit too much time on style and not quite enough on function. This is the first time Apple's done this to me and its incredibly irritating.
This is not good. I can't believe Categorization was removed from Numbers 3.0. This feature needs to be restored.
Message to everyone who views this: Please request that Categories be restored to Numbers 3.0 via the Numbers Feedback site. Thanks!
As GWNF says - everyone who comes here looking for table categories - please go to the Apple feedback site and request this feature to be restored.
I did a request, I need the categories.
I agree, the categories feature was insanly useful to me. I use numbers for keeping inventory on a huge selection of items that have many subcategories. WHY WOULD THEY TAKE THIS AWAY!?!?!?!? Not happy about this at all. 😟
Agreed. It was a super useful feature. I hope they bring it back.
I've given a feedback to the iWork team about the missing Categories.
In the meantime, I recovered the ver 2 of the iWork suite and have now made that default for *.numbers and *.pages. Used version history to go back to my old numbers files and now have Categories.
Also the new ver 3 didn't allow me to add Rows(!!??) Can add column to the old files but not rows. Totally broken. Now with ver 2, I'm a happy bunny. Almost pulled the trigger for MS Office. Thank God I didn't. That would have been even worse I think.
Habeeb,
Does Option-Arrow still work for you? A tested on a document created in V3 and all four directions still work for adding Rows/Columns.
Also tested on an old doc and Inserting Rows and Columns works there too, but only by Keyboard Shortcut.

Another feature I was suprised to have removed out from under me in the new iWork. They removed mail merge from Pages too. This makes no sense to alienate all your existing users by removing functionality we actually use!
Next to Categorize my other option I heavily use: Mailmerge. I changed everything a year ago to Pages and Numbers and now all my efforts: gone, moving back to MS Office???? Aaarggh
Luckily I can still open my documents with the old versions of Pages and Numbers, so I hope I didnt convert the wrong ones.
