Q: iBooks in Mavericks lost 700 books

For a short while, iBooks Mavericks showed all my books and pdf's. They all disappeared.  I found the directory ~/Library>Containers>com.apple.BKAgentService>Data>Documents>iBooks>Books with about 700 folders, epub files and PDF's.

When I right-click to <Open In> and select iBooks, iBooks tells me the book is already in my library.  But there are no books visible in any of the tabs in iBooks.

Some but not all of the books are on my iPad 4.  I can'f find a way to sync the new iBooks with the iPad.

I hope someone finds an answers. I'm stuck.

Apple is screwing up everything that is not their core music download service.  First they made Podcasts virtually unuseable, to the point where I no loger use Apple's Podcasta App and manage my podcasts using a different application.

Now I find myself doing the same with ebooks. After losing all of my content in the most recent upgrade, I've abandoned Apple for ebooks completely.  Since Steve died they won't listen until it affects their bottom line. If enough people abandon the platform, maybe they will fix it.

Here a solution that works perfectly for me, and it took me about an hour to set up and I've never looked back:

Abandon iBooks completely.  I now use Kindle for purchased content and PDF Connoseur for PDF content. Kindle has many more books and better prices, while PDF connoseur is a comprehensive PDF handling app that I've found is superior to iBooks in every way.. I've never looked back.

Just ran into this disappearing books problem after syncing ipad to MBPr. Tried eiphoneversteher's solution (quit iBooks, remove everything from /Users/[username]/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iB ooks/Books to temp, open iBooks, drag contents of temp folder into iBooks) and it worked for me. BTW, Apple support does not seem to be aware of this solution, they were going to have me try to remigrate my two month older version of my library back from my old laptop.

Meanwhile there is a shorer solution for this:

Just reimport your ibooks from itunes.

Open ibooks goto Ablage (repository? the second menue from the left, next to the ibook menue) and than choose transfer books from itunes (the last but one from the bottom).

I gave up on Ibooks last night. After 3 painful hours of scouring the Internet for help. I simply wanted all my Books, Pdf's and presentations synced across all my ios platforms. Iphone, Ipad, Imac & MBA. I officially called it quits! Im back to Evernote! Ill pay the $45 a year to have all my docs sync without an act of congres and/or the planets aligning. Im a big fan of apple. But the inability of this fuction to happen seamlessly and predictably has soured me on IBooks.

    Same issue here.

All books gone (still can restore files from folder iBooks stores them)

When I'm trying to add books again - iBooks asks to replace, but nothing happens - it just asks to replace again and again...

upset with Apple and the quality of latest software...

Same for me with iPhoto.  Not the losing part, but just to clumsy to work with.  iBooks used to work OK when it was part of iTunes, but they have been steadily hacking what worked apart.  Dropbox, Evernote, and a few othes third party applications have fortunately been handy.  Why Apple has lost the vision is a mystery....

I have a solution. WHen I try to add a pdf to my iBooks library it says "ALready present". I try to replace the existing copy and then it goes on asking me whether I  want to rpelae or not again and again. When I check in the library I find the pdf isn't present. So what I did. I right clicked on the file in the finder window and opened it in iBooks. THen it was in the library and I could also add it to my collections. I do not know whther this is a generalised solution but it works for me. I hope it help.
