iBooks in Mavericks lost 700 books

For a short while, iBooks Mavericks showed all my books and pdf's. They all disappeared. I found the directory ~/Library>Containers>com.apple.BKAgentService>Data>Documents>iBooks>Books with about 700 folders, epub files and PDF's.

When I right-click to <Open In> and select iBooks, iBooks tells me the book is already in my library. But there are no books visible in any of the tabs in iBooks.

Some but not all of the books are on my iPad 4. I can'f find a way to sync the new iBooks with the iPad.

I hope someone finds an answers. I'm stuck.

I noticed exactly the same... I like the fact that ibooks is on the mac but it already screwed up my whole collection. I have reset my librart and added the books again and after that they were visible again until I restarted the app and boom... they were gone again.

When I add one of these books manually again I get the message that it already exists and when I choose to overwrite I get the error "operation not permitted"...

Anyone that has a fix already? Cause this is driving my nuts!

off toptic, anyone who know how to edit metadata? This function does not seem to be there and really makes the app useless...

I similarly had a very large library that appeared to transfer when I first opened iBooks on Mavericks. Only books purchased through the iTunes store showed up, and attempts to manually add others resulted in the same "already in your library" message, even though they were not visible. Moreover, I can see no way to manage which books to sync with ipad, iphone, etc except through iTunes, and no way to add new books in iTunes, or to edit authors names, cover art, or other metadata. Many of us have large epub libraries, not to mention PDFs, obtained by legitimate means from sources such as Project Gutenberg, Google Books, and other ebook sellers that are not available on the iTunes store.

EBEO's solution is not a fix. The message now is there are no books in iTunes to transfer.

Yes I agree, I even used the option to move books from itunes to ibooks. I am happy that I had a backup because it is really a MOVE. after the import in ibooks the books are gone in itunes and since I can't see them either in ibooks they seem to be lost.

I really hope this is fixed soon, luckily I still have a lot of books unread on my ipad but this has to be solved soon!

@srobinsn,

did you see the books at first in ibooks as well? After my initial import I could see the books but after closing and re-opening the app they were gone... I tried resetting the library but same behaviour....

Yes, I saw the books at first and the transfer indicated that all books were being copied. Later, I tried adding missing books manually by dragging to the new iBooks window, but "the operation was not allowed". I also found the new iBooks library in ~/Library>Containers>com.apple.BKAgentService etc., but only books that I had manually re-downloaded from the cloud were there. Calibre won't connect anymore, nor will other third party transfer programs. The option I'm pursuing now is to edit books on a 2nd computer on which I will never open the new iBooks.

Same issue here. I have hundreds of epubs and pdfs that I read constantly on both the computer, iPhone and ipad. When I opened iBooks, I got a tranferring progress bar, but when it finished, nothing was in iBooks.

When I try to add PDFs, I get an error saying "'PDF NAME' couldn’t be copied because you don’t have permission to access 'Temporary'." But I checked that folder and my user account has read & write priveledges.

I almost wish there was no iBooks at all and I could just continue syncing via iTunes! At least it worked like it was supposed to...

Not really Hoefnix (if everyone has exactly the same issue). It does not seem to be related to the import from itunes but the import in general. What I noticed is that importing the books works fine. If I drag one book in the app it shows and even opens fine, but when I close the app and re-open it is gone.

When I drag all books together in the app I see them under the author list but they are not visible under "all books". When I then close the app and re-open it they are all gone as well....

In my case, all my books and pdfs show on ibooks on my iPhone and iPad, but none of them appear on iBooks on my MacBook Air - I have only two books showing on my Air - one transferred from iTunes, the other an iBook Author produced book [which the instructions say will not show on an iPhone] .. so I haven't lost anything, but I haven't gained anything either other than being able to read two books on my Air.... I am afraid to attempt to 'move' them as I might lose them all
