That is a real show stopper. I switched from Android to iPhone because of the local sync, as I am not allowed to sync over iCloud due to privacy restrictions in Germany (and I also would not do it because that would probably mean that the NSA could directly access my contacts via Apple). I hope Apple rethinks this decision.

ingo16,

I, too, need local sync. Although I live in the US where privacy considerations are virtually non-existent, some of us can not and will not use iCloud or any other cloud service to sync our calendar and contact data. Today, I have advised my colleagues on campus to avoid the Mavericks and iTunes updates.

This weekend, I will be spending rather a lot of time wiping my hard drive, reinstalling OS X 10.8, and restoring my data and apps (thank you, Apple). Unfortunately, it seems the time has come to find another operating system and set of apps.

The only chance of getting Apple to rethink their decision is that they are continuly reminded we are not happy with what appears to be an attempt to force our data into their iCloud while eliminating our choices for how we use and sync our devices and data. And a few articles or comments in the tech blogs might help.

I have not used the iCloud for anything except for Calendar app with only schedules and alerts.

If Apple requires iCloud to sync Contacts to the iPhone, how about putting Contacts in the iCloud - sync to iPhone - then delete or override the Contacts in the iCloud?

from the iCloud help menu:

WARNING: When you delete a contact, it is deleted on every device that has the iCloud Contacts feature turned on. For example, if your iPhone and Mac have iCloud Contacts turned on, and you delete a contact with the iCloud Contacts web app, the contact is also deleted in the Contacts app on your iPhone and Mac.

Checked my iMac > Contacts > Accounts tab and it indicates On My Mac (Local). I click on the + at bottom and all are not checked. This might mean that I can delete the Contacts in icloud and not delete the iMac Contacts. Could this be a work-a-round to Apple’s turn to iCloud?

I can't beleive what a bad decsion this is.

Instead of using a 2 foot cable to sync contacts and calendars, I now have to upload to your mystery servers whereever they are in the cloud?!

Apple are not listening on this.

They did the same thing with notes on Mountain Lion too and there are 8 discussions boards complaining about that genius move.

Mavericks was a great update in general but this is a major loss in functionality.

Well with the update & force to use iCloud or any other cloud service Apple has given me a great excuse to ditch my iPhone and buy another phone with Windows 8 or Android where there are at least apps that will give me the option to sync my private information without the use of external systems.

And the way the new OSX update feels it might also be the last update for my Macbook Air to replace it with another laptop with another OS.

Thanks Apple, clever move! Samsung and Microsoft will be happy.

I am so glad I read this thread before I updated to Mavericks, which I will not be doing. I found this because I'm trying to sync my iphone to my new macbook. I cannot believe that my phone has an app 'Notes', and my macbook has an app 'Notes', yet they can't talk to one another! And now to discover that if I upgrade my OS I will be forced Cloudwards for all my syncing? No bloody way. Not happy Apple. Not happy at all.

Where else can I complain?
