So to delete a page  - like you I saved in '09 version did my changes then opened up again in version 5.0.

I have now spent several hours trying to move to 5.0 - not sure why I am doing this?

I am also surprised (or not) that formatting changes between the two versions of Pages....

I have 40 documents that I need to update on a regular basis - everyone of them changes when I open in 5.0.....

By the way unchecking the Document Body box as suggested by TSO Center is only helpful if you are starting a new document..... If you do it with an existing document you just delete stuff.

Is anyone staying with '09? Do you think that it will work on future OS upgrades?

jemetos, if I had 40 documents to update regularly, I'd probably stay with old version. Even if you were to edit all 40 documents and use v5 in the future, you would still be working (struggling?) with the v5 feature set, I predict.  I have invested a LOT of time to edit old documents and use v5 only because I have a few documents, a half-dozen or so. (Part of my reasoning to use v5: I couldn't let Apple 'win' and force me back to the old version! Talk about irrationality on my part!)

Your last question will probably be the eternal classic: "will it (Pages '09) work on future OS upgrades?".  My thinking is: If Apple does this (remove features) to trusting customers of a current version of an app, what will they do to trusting customers of a non-current version of an app?

Youtunbe is your friend! They ususally offer the simplest and surest solutions over there... The solution is to uncheck document body in setting under the document tab. then you can just select the page and hit delete!

If youre having trouble looking for that here's the link:

When it comes to word processors intuitive is how microsft word works. sorry but this time you have to swallow that! OR simply imagine someone typing a document in a typewriter.

Unchecking Document Body deletes all the content, is that a good idea just to remove a page?

That hardly constitutes a "solution", cutting off your leg to clip your nails.

Most people who have invested in their work are sticking with Pages '09, at least until Apple gets Pages out of its unofficial public beta.

There is a reason Pages 5 has now hit 1.5 stars in our local App Store. The steady progression has been to nothing but 1 stars as people have had a chance to familiarise themselves with it.

My document contained text but mostly images and other objects. Nothing was deleted. Unchecking document body did not delete anything...so my legs are still there... I couldn't however move and insert new pages so I decided to work on the document in keynote.

In other words you were using Textboxes in the first place.

Well I have been struggling with the new Pages for a while now. I am still incredibly frustrated by it. The fact that the old version of pages sits on the machine counts as some sort of recognition that the new is not a replacement for the old.

What we have with the 'upgrade' is a fairly functional word processor. The advantages to new users is that it is pretty intuitive and the same version exists on all devices.

My problem is that I classify myself as an experienced user. I create documents that are course handouts for delegates on training programmes. I pitch for work by presenting my company in writing. Pages 09 was perfect for this. Some great templates. The ability to move things around easily. I love functions like instant alpha and the ability to clone colours from anywhere. When they announced the upgrade I was initially really pleased. But then the reality kicked in. The 'Upgrade' took away masses of the functionality. This has been well reported. What Apple seem to have done is to have sacrificed the Desk Top Publishing side of the Pages software and just focussed on the basics. So writing a letter or short boring report is easy. Creating great documents that can easily be changed and reformated is not.

The bottom line is that the new version of pages does not treat thumbnails in the same way. You can't simply grab something and move it. This really is annoying when a document created in 09 imports to the new version. You simply can't move it around as once you could. Sure you can cut and paste stuff but the resulting chaos on the page is just too much effort.

The weird thing is how confusing it is opening and closing files with both versions running on my machine. I am tempted to dump the new version of pages but I have so many files and documents that have been 'upgraded' to the new version it means I have to exist in some confusing parallel universe.

So I have written two letters of complaint to Apple. I have given the software a one star review on the web site and encourage all frustrated users to do the same. Then maybe they can take some of their billions of dollars of spare cash and sort out the word processor!

Do you really think Apple cares what its users think or want, so long as they don't leave?

Even then they are not that concerned, there is a reason they are dumbing everything down.

That is their market now, …and a very large one.

Hello and THANK YOU - how obvious this was... ...deleting page breaks deletes pages - this is perfect.

    Thanks KEG55.

I ran into a related problem and I found the solution.

If you have "Body" pages, the following page thumbnails will appear smaller than the first page thumbnail.

    • You cannot move the body pages because it considers them as one "page" or one body.
    • If you have a blank body page that you cannot get rid of, there is a hidden symbol that is at the end of the last character on the filled page. You have to highlight the symbol alone and press "backspace" to remove the blank body page. (See attached image below for reference)

    Screen Shot 2014-05-12 at 5.00.37 PM.png

If you have regular pages, the following page thumbnails will all appear the same size as the first page thumbnail.

    • You CAN drag and drop these pages in any desired order as they are actual separate pages.

Hope this is helpful to anyone having the same problem.

    You are talking about Sections.

The smaller thumbnails indicate following pages in a Section.

Invisible characters can all lead to blank pages if they are Pages Breaks, returns, soft returns or tabs that spill over the page.

"Regular pages" are not regular, they are Layout templates ie they have the document body (where text flows from page to page) turned off.

Because Layout templates do not flow text from one page to another every page is its own section.

I figured it out.  It is not as easy to figure out as it could be.  But it is easy to do.

If your complete document is saved in a single section you will not be able to rearrange pages or delete a selected page.

Open the sidebar showing the page thumbnails.

Click the bottom of the actual page.

Go to insert and select "Section Break"

Do this for each page to break them up from a single section.

Now you can drag and move or delete individual pages.

Hope this helps, it is very simple once you do this.

    Jeremy

Your "discovered" solution, has been posted endlessly here and is hardly startingly, let alone new and is at the fundamental level, perfectly obvious.

    Peter

btw Most of the discussion here predated the restitution of the this basic feature in Pages 5.2.

    Peter

Thanks for the reply, the solution was not easy to find on the thread and an added posted solution may help someone else cut their search time down to finding a solution.

But thank you for not having a life and commenting meaninglessly to show your superiority of Pages 5.2

And thank you for your not meaningless response.

What was the point of adding the response to an old thread that has been superceded by Pages 5.2?

The two latest posts were on a separate matter that the poster, latched onto here for some reason.

You adding a more or less irrelevant post here will be equally as hard to find as any of the other hundreds if not thousands of posts you say were hard to locate.

Which is not your fault, the Search function and its results has always been mystifying to not just you, but me and many others.
