Well I have been struggling with the new Pages for a while now. I am still incredibly frustrated by it. The fact that the old version of pages sits on the machine counts as some sort of recognition that the new is not a replacement for the old.
What we have with the 'upgrade' is a fairly functional word processor. The advantages to new users is that it is pretty intuitive and the same version exists on all devices.
My problem is that I classify myself as an experienced user. I create documents that are course handouts for delegates on training programmes. I pitch for work by presenting my company in writing. Pages 09 was perfect for this. Some great templates. The ability to move things around easily. I love functions like instant alpha and the ability to clone colours from anywhere. When they announced the upgrade I was initially really pleased. But then the reality kicked in. The 'Upgrade' took away masses of the functionality. This has been well reported. What Apple seem to have done is to have sacrificed the Desk Top Publishing side of the Pages software and just focussed on the basics. So writing a letter or short boring report is easy. Creating great documents that can easily be changed and reformated is not.
The bottom line is that the new version of pages does not treat thumbnails in the same way. You can't simply grab something and move it. This really is annoying when a document created in 09 imports to the new version. You simply can't move it around as once you could. Sure you can cut and paste stuff but the resulting chaos on the page is just too much effort.
The weird thing is how confusing it is opening and closing files with both versions running on my machine. I am tempted to dump the new version of pages but I have so many files and documents that have been 'upgraded' to the new version it means I have to exist in some confusing parallel universe.
So I have written two letters of complaint to Apple. I have given the software a one star review on the web site and encourage all frustrated users to do the same. Then maybe they can take some of their billions of dollars of spare cash and sort out the word processor!
