Q: Graphic failure after full on memory consumption

After few hours of usage mostly after a high memory consumption, my mac starts doing these lines. Now i never had this issue before maverick upgrade. Can someone let me know what is going on. Rebooting fixes the issue for now.

Same problem here. Corrupt graphics on shadow areas

    (Macbook Pro 17" late-2010 - 2,8GHz i7, GeForce GT 330M - 512mb)

I can fix it temporarily (for a couple of minutes) by switching the display resolution in system preferences. But I guess David's solution is (so far) the best choice until a software upgrade:

(Preferences>Energy Saver>(Turning off) Auto Graphics Switching)

I'm having the same issue with a Mid 2010 iMac. Everything was running fine on 10.8 and then as soon as upgrading to 10.9 the graphics have been messing up after about 20 minutes of use. Tried a fresh install of 10.9 and it still has the same effect so I don't think its due to a bad installation.

Just to confirm that I have the same problem on a 2009 iMac. Started some time after upgrading to 10.9.

I'm having the same exact problem too after upgrading to Mavericks! I'm having to reboot often to temporarily correct. I have a MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2010

(Preferences>Energy Saver>(Turning off) Auto Graphics Switching) is an easier solution then rebooting give it a try seems to work for most including me.

I wish apple rep or tech responded to the thread saying they notice the issue and working on the fix for it. So many people are effected by this.

I'm still of the opinion that those of you with 15" mid-2010 MacBook Pros are having graphics glitches because of the faulty Nvidia GPU found in a great number of those models. Mavericks, I believe, is just bringing the problem to the forefront.

@clintonfrombirmingham: While that may be the case for some users, most of us affected by this Mavericks issue encounter graphic corruption when the system is using the integrated Intel card, not the Nvidia chip.  In fact, a workaround for many has been to force the computer to only use the Nvidia graphics and never switch to the power-saving Intel one.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Another "funny" obervation. Preview dosen't work as it used to either. When opening e.g. large .tif files, the picture first shows OK for a very short period, then it's overwritten by grey squares. GraphicConverter and Photoshop Elements are however still working OK.

Is it a wild guess to think that it might be something wrong in code writen by Apple? Maybe related to memory management?

The 10.9.1 beta has been released to developers:

    http://9to5mac.com/2013/11/15/apple-seeds-first-os-x-mavericks-10-9-1-beta-to-de velopers-with-focuses-on-mail-graphics/

With this, Apple has asked developers to focus on Mail, Graphics Drivers, and VoiceOver in their testing.  Which, hopefully, means the problems we're seeing are amongst the major concerns that this release is targeting and looking to fix.

Same problem here folks. Constant GUI corruption and crashing after upgrading to OS X 10.9.

      Model Name:          MacBook Pro

      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro8,2

      Processor Name:          Intel Core i7

      Processor Speed:          2.4 GHz

      Number of Processors:          1

      Total Number of Cores:          4

L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB

      L3 Cache:          6 MB

      Memory:          16 GB

Related to graphics switching probably as others have pointed out. Using dedicated only graphics is a crappy workaround for me - hot noisy, and poor battery life. Not happy with Apple. I bought a Mac Mini hoping to get some work done, as the crashing is terribly disruptive.

i have to agree with you - i had no problems for the past 2 years using Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro model 6,2  until I installed Mavericks OS X 10.9. Now,  I'm also seeing the corrupt graphics as reported.

[ I did have a problem with OS X 10.7 Lion, as many of us with the 6,2 machines experienced - unable to login unless AGS was disabled: at the time there was some confusion also as to whether it was software or hardware related. Apple provided a fix in the final patch to OS X 10.7 - but by that time I had decided to continue using Snow Leopard]
