Jun 6, 2014 9:12 AM in response to kiripapby Alexander Grossman,This is the first positive information on iBooks i've heard in quite a long time. Anything that would permit full control over the metadata, as was present in iTunes, is to be welcomed and appreciated and may make iBooks actually useful.

Aug 11, 2014 4:21 AM in response to StoneSoupby LokiMacbook,Hey guys thanks to kevin and stonesoup and Andy
After following Kevins and Andys steps, it still works on 10.9.4 and the latest version on itunes
just some side notes to help everyone save some time. spent like an hour and a half figuring this out and following the thread
1. Use activity monitor to close the process, haha as a newbie i didnt know that
2. After deleting the entries, use appcleaner to remove the ibooks app. If you feel like it you can copy the program to a removable drive
but what is really important is
EVERY TRACE OF THE IBOOKS APP MUST BE DESTROYED! you cant just move it into some obscure folder, like stone soup said, completely erradicate it from the system. Right after that the books tab will come up on your itunes. Then you can happily import epubs and PDFs
Good luck everyone !

Aug 15, 2014 6:46 AM in response to Garindanby kgf3076,This might be an easier way to delete the second worst program ever to come out of Cupertino (iTunes 12 being the worst...so far. I haven't named that the definitive winner quite yet).
If you want to get rid of iBooks and have the Books back in iTunes:
1.) Kill the bookstoreagent service using the Activity Monitor.
2.) Delete the file for that service: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CommerceKit.framework/Versions/A/Resources/bo okstoreagent
3.) Use AppCleaner (do a Google search for this, download it and run it) to get rid of iBooks.
4.) Shut down iTunes.
5.) Restart iTunes and reimport your books into iTunes
6.) Go to iTunes preferences/General and make sure that Books is checked.
7.) You should have your books back in iTunes.
This works on OS X 10.9.x versions. Unfortunately, it does NOT work on 10.10. I'm hoping someone will find a way to delete this garbage program from 10.10.

Oct 17, 2014 5:07 AM in response to kiripapby John-Francis Kinsler,Just installed Yosemite on my secondary iMac to see if iBooks can indeed keep metadata added in iTunes or if editing is possible...
Unfortunately, although a BIT better than Mavericks most of the metadata i added in iTunes has been trashed... Editing does not seem to
be possible in a practical manner... There is a way to add an author or category to a drop down list BUT it seems like a month of work to
reorganize my PDF collection (20 Gigs worth) and that is only with partial metadata!
I wonder if and when someone will be able to figure out a way to keep the books in iTunes like our Mavericks workaround of deleting iBooks completely...
Until then I guess I have to keep my Macbook Pro in Mavericks...
I am such an Apple fan... and I can not understand why this is issue is being ignored and swept under the rug as it is uncharacteristic of apple...
This problem along with Apple TV's inconsistent method sorting of iTunes U files NOT ignoring Articles (A, An, The) in the titles.
While they are ignored in the original iTunes library and also ignored on the Apple TV for Movies, TV Shows, and Music... It defies logic...
I think it's acceptable in the beginning but to allow these "problems/issues" to continue without addressing them is disappointing...
Yes, it is true that for the general masses these two issues may not matter... But for someone who investing hundreds of hours adding and organizing content
to the apple ecosystem, it is disheartening when later releases take a number of steps backwards...
I was HORRIFIED when all my books were stripped of their metadata last year... I learned my lesson have taken precautions with this update... However, I was sure they would have taken steps to warn customers this year or even better: added editing functionality and transfer iTunes data completely... I am disappointed as your post gave me much hope, but I guess there aren't enough of us to rock the boat hard enough and make them care... : ( Any friends of John Gruber or Walt Mossberg reading this post? We could certainly use their help in getting this issue addressed!!!

Oct 17, 2014 6:47 AM in response to John-Francis Kinslerby hpp23,Forget iBooks, use Calibre. It's the best app to manage ebooks from all sources. I use Calibre together with Marvin, an ebook reading app for iOS. Both work together like a charm.
iBooks is, like iTunes, part of Apple's ecosystem. So these two apps are mostly selling platforms of DRM protected media. Users of iTunes & iBooks should consume, not manage the stuff they have bought from Apple.

Oct 3, 2015 9:47 AM in response to NoMercy34by SazeracLA,This, in addition to other El Capitan issues I've been reading about, will be the reason that El Capitan will be the third OS X version to which I have refused to upgrade solely because of the utter disaster that is iBooks for OS X. Still running Mountain Lion, because I don't want my 1500+ title library of ebooks and PDFs to be screwed up by this awful software. Sigh.
