Q: Wifi Greyed out with exclamation mark, but wifi still works !! after Mavericks upgrade.

After updateing to Mavericks i noticed my Wifi is greyed out with and exclamation saying ALERT: No internet. Funny thing is i can connect and have full conectivity. After running the WIFI diognostic tool, the result was my internet is fine and working properly the Wifi still remains Grey with an Exclamation Mark. Any Advice would be appreciated.

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is marked solved, less people are likely to look at it. You can link to this one.

    This solution worked for me

    sudo cd /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
    sudo mv NetworkInterfaces.plist NetworkInterfaces.plist.orig
    sudo mv preferences.plist preferences.plist.orig
    sudo reboot

I tried to delete the relevant plists and reboot ... nothing.

    So.

Sean Stevens told me to try "flipping the bit" by going to System Preferences/Network and unclick "Show Wi-Fi status in menu bar" then reclick it!

    Give it a try.

I used your suggested sudo command solution. However, a few of my apps now quit unexpectedly. Can you please provide the sudo commands to bring me back to the former settings?

    Thanks!

Did you follow the instructions (unfortunately omitted by spillenepp in his repost) to back them up first?

    Backup these 2 files:

    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist

    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

Then delete these 2 files and reboot.

No, I did however back up my laptop approximately 1 week ago. Does this help at all?

I am running 10.10.1 on a Macbook Pro and have recently been having the same problem.

I don't have a SystemConfiguration folder in Library/Preferences so was unable to try that sollution.

However, I did change my ipV4 setting in Network Preferences / Advanced from 'DCHP with Manual Address' to 'DCHP' and that worked for me

Yes, this works. Thank you. I've had this problem ever since I bought my Air in January. This is a widespread issue that Apple should have fixed by now. All it would take is a stanza in the next system update that deleted and restored the files.

It's in /Library -- not the one in your home folder. Click on the icon for your hard drive and you will find it there.

    So I'm curious ...

I did not follow this portion of the instructions because I could not figure out fast enough how to back up the file and am simply impatient. Crossing my fingers, I copied the two files, saved them to an erroneous folder, deleted them and restarted.

The restart went fine, the exclamation point was gone, but now I've noticed some other things ...

    - the name of my computer has reverted to Macbook Pro in finder

    - my phone just told me that my keychain  was reset by another device

Before I go on with life and adjust these few things, I'm wondering - have I done something wrong?

Should I put the old "preferences" file back in the system configuration folder? See if the exclamation point (that was seemingly causing no issue to begin with) comes back?

    etc, etc, etc

    Thanks!

I think you're probably ok. I suggest that you make the adjustments but keep the copies of the old pref files until you're sure everything is working correctly.
