Hyperlinks and bookmarks missing in Pages 5.0?

I am having trouble finding hyperlinks and bookmarks in the new Pages 5.0. None of my old documents show their bookmarks or hyperlinks!

And there seems to be no way to add or link them.

Command-K only links to website.

This is a major problem for me - I am a writer and all of my hyperlinks to chapters and sections are gone.

Anyone know anything?

Supposedly, links are automatically created when a Table of Contents is inserted. I'm not on my Mac to check this.

Add a table of contents

You can add an automatically updating table of contents to any document. Table of contents entries are links, so clicking one takes a reader directly to the page.

Some Pages templates already include a table of contents, which you can edit. You can also add a table of contents, then edit it to specify which parts of the document you want it to include.

Pages uses paragraph styles to generate the table of contents. If you aren’t using them to format text in your document, you won’t be able to generate an automatic table of contents.

You can also add hyperlinks to URLs in your document.

Select the URL text in your document and click the Insert toolbar button. At the bottom is Add Link. This will make the selected text a clickable link. You can also edit existing links by selecting the link and right click on it; then Edit Link.

There are a whole host of errrors in this version. True bugs. There are other conversations on the TOC problem so you are not losing your mind - Apple did when they put out a poorly tested product.

Hyperlinks are now 'link' and do not work in PDFs. The problem with links is when you edit them in the new little box that appears. If you type the URL and let Pages creat the link itself, that link will survive to the PDF. The second you edit it - i.e. add a shorter visible name. or try to copy a URL in to the box, or even 'add link" to existing text it no longer works.

This may not help with TOC but at least I was able to inlcude some links (albeit long ugly URLs) in my PDF document.

There are also problems with layers and text wrapping. I'll have a text box nicely wrapping around an object, then the next time I open the file the text is not wrapping at all and is in front of the picture. AND even though it shows correctly in Pages when I print to PDF the text is wrong again. But then when I reprint to PDF it's right. I also have layers that automatically move to the front again and again.

This doesn't help me, and it probably won't help you, but...

Here are a couple of articles about this. (I'll just be using iWork '09 for a while yet...)

Apple's document mentioned in the second article:

At least we might have an insight into their thinking?

Note - hyperlinks weren't mentioned in the document (link 3) were they? Did I miss that?

Pages 5 gutted a lot of functionality.

Pages 4 is still in an iWork folder within your Applications folder. You can use that to get work done.

First, if you don't have a backup of the file you were working with, use "Export as.. Pages 4.3" to make the file compatible with the older version.

And, yeah- it's appalling. Please also let Apple know at:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/pages.html

A review on the AppStore can't hurt, either.

There is a difference between change in function and bugs in the software. LInks stop working as soon as you edit them. Layers re-allign on their own. Text wrapping works in Pages then dissapears on the PDF. There are some true problems with this.

The tip to export as 4.3 is very helpful. I thought my documents were ruined without the links my readers need.

They do say they don't respond to posts here. That it is supposed to be user to user.

Not quite true as there are occassional responses from Apple paid employees here. Why I am not quite sure as they don't seem to be particularly knowledgeable and simply quote from Apple's Help.

Best is to let your displeasure be known in the App Store, where everyone can see it, or at least those who bother reading the reviews before leaping into the deep end.
