Need help in Transferring 4gig+ files to external that can be both compatible w/ Mac and Windows

Im using a mac mini Late 2012. I can't seem to transfer big files into my External Hard Disk(500gig). I need to transfer my two files, a 4-6min video Raw which is about 4.9gig. The thing is, the message box display 'The file xxxx can't be copied because it is too large for the volume's format'. The format type by the way is of my external drive is MS-DOS(FAT) -- external hd 500gig. Is there a way that i can't transfer a file that is over 4gig++(a file) to my external and that is also compatible with both mac and windows?

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Hello DdeokbokkiIsYummy.

Try to format the external HD in ExFat, in disk utilities, due that Fat 32 its not going to allow you copy files up to 4 Gb, ExFat will allow you to use the HD in both platforms ( Windows/Mac).

Hope you solve your issue with this info.

Regards.
