Q: Impossible to activate iMessage and Facetime in Mavericks

've just instaled Maverick upgrade and now iMessage and Facetime try to connect with my Apple ID but iMessage is not responding and Facetime finally returns a connection error.

I tried to find someone with the same issue, but I couldn't find any. I would appreciate any help.

Best regards,

Andres

I am happy for the upgrade, just upset that no one responds when you need real answers. I hate asking non-apple users.

This problem causes some problems but if you think this is bad and are thinking in buying a Surface RT, think twice :)

Over "there" the windows 8.1 upgrade caused some problems. Microsoft responded alright but with a web page explaining how to fix the problem. The funny part is that most of the steps are console commands, loved but power users but not for the average normal guy.

Apple will fix this with an update, normally 2-3 weeks after a major release. Just be patient.

By the way, I've opened a bug report here: http://bugreport.apple.com

Ok. Will go through the steps provided. BTW, Thanks for the reply and the pointers! Much appreciated.

    • Remove the apple id from imessage preferences and close and reopen: done that, no change.
    • Changing the time zone to automatic (including icloud). Done, no change
    • Making sure your serial number is not blank within OSX. A HA!! I had my mother board changed more than a year ago. In "About This Mac" the serial number is blank and has been since then  Screen Shot 2013-10-28 at 19.55.52.png

So how does one get the serial number back into this?

    • Fresh install.... done and finished. no change
    • removing alternate id associated with icloud... Mhen! done... no change
    • logging with alternate id... done. poughy! no change

So it comes down to the serial number. if there is an apple document please point me to it. thx

Time Zone was the issue for me. I couldn't even log into Twitter until this was fixed. There's two time zone options you need to click on. In Time Zone you have to click on Automatically and on Date & Time you have to click on Automatic as well. But for me it was still incorrect until I corrected it again. Thanks!

Please look back to my previous post on for USB setup instead of CD boot.

FYI not an Apple Document.  This is a third party fix... so use at your own risk.

    Good Luck.

I burned the missing serial number into my logic board and it made no difference.  "About This Mac" now shows the system's serial number but I still can't log into imessage/facetime.

    davshirley,

Triple check that you typed in the serial number exactly as it is written on your Mac.  This is very important.  Remember the letter 'O' should be a zero according to apples online document found here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1349?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

If you typed it in wrong your Serial number maybe malformed. If this is the case you will now have to go to the Apple Store and get them to write the correct one to your Motherboard.

If that is not the problem then make sure you sign in and out of icloud on your system. then back into facetime and imessage.  This should recreate your certificates.  Also,  double check that your timezone is correct before you do this.

    Best of Luck

Well, today I received a call from an Apple representative who gave me some steps to collect info from my macbook pro. Our problem is being investigated by Apple and when the fix is found Apple will release it through an update. Keep cool, keep calm... bugs exist and you simply can't replicate all the scenarios in lab.

    Lets wait.

I've been contacted also by Apple and the data was collected from my iMac.

    Let's give them a chance

Did you ask apple to contact you or did they just do so on their own?  Hate to sound paranoid but I do work in the security field...  How do you know it was apple?  What was the procedure that they had you use to collect said data?  Was it already built into the OS or did they have you do something "special?"

I had a rep contact me as well, but I wasn't able to speak to them because my phone isn't working. I believe it's legitimate.
