MacBook Pro (mid 2007) freezes after upgrade to Mavericks

Hello,

After the upgrade to Mavericks my MacBook Pro (mid 2007) freezes after a couple of minutes of usage - after successful install and the use of some apps. Not bad enough the system is now always crashing if I try to boot. PM reset didn't help. Booting from the restore partition was possible, but I decided to go back to a working backup of 10.8.4 made a minute before I tried to upgrade. Why 10.8.4? Because 10.8.5 causes the strange problem that the Mac freezes after wake up from sleep.

Any suggestions?

Anyone else having this problem?

Kind regards

Ok problem solved (sort of),

from windows, or from anyplace you can access macos harddrive go to:

/library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

And then rename this file:

com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

to whatever name you want,

restart and macos 10.9 will boot again 🙂

Macos will create the file back and by default enable wifi,

Just keep in mind to not disable wifi! until apple solves the issue

Cheers

I am having same problem. Appears Apple changed something in the OS X after 10.8.4. Now running 10.9 / Mavericks and same problem.

One temporary work around if you have wireless router (I have Airport/TimeMachine) is to repeatedly reboot and try to get to "Turn WiFi On" button upper right. Then go to System Preferences > Network > Ethernet > Configure IPv4: > Off.

If you can't get that far, try booting into recovery mode, select Disk Utility and run "Verify Disk." If it returns clear, then try booting again. Something in the verify routine seems to get the MBP's mind straightened out. Then reboot again using menu under the Apple upper left.

Can then run ok WiFi only.

Note: Pretty sure not a hardware problem as I purchased a USB/Ethernet connector and got the same result though USB Ethernet hookup, so not the card where the cable plugs in.

TimeMachine backup slow as tired snail on wireless link, but still works. Works normal speed with firewire link to external drive for backup.

Sent a "bug report" to Apple, but haven't heard anything back.

Take this all with grain of salt as it sounds like I know more than I actually do, but it got me back up on

lan, at least wirelessly:-)

You should try getting more information about the cause of the crash. Is your Mac's temperature abnormal before the freeze? Any high CPU or RAM usage? You could also try reinstalling Mavericks from a freshly downloaded installer. I saw an iMac that got messed up by the Mavericks update and totally froze up after a few minutes, and I noticed that half of its core libraries were missing or corrupted from the installation!

I like to simply avoid updates that don't bring any features that I need. Always some problem, or just more RAM usage :S

I did not notice ram usage, but the CPU was working hard and yes the computer got quite hot very quickly while freeze going on.

I am planning to get a new mac, probably a MacbookAir, soon. After I get everything set up on it, I may try working this out on old macbook pro. Can't afford to get everything shot down at once right now.

Thanks.

Is it one process hogging the CPU? Perhaps the computer is overheating. The 2007 MBP is kinda famous for getting burning hot (my mom's MBP's CPU temp passes the boiling point of water when it's working hard).

When I first installed Mavericks, my computer was very slow, and I think there were like 10 mdworker or mds processes hogging the CPU. After a day, it worked fine.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Hello all,

Please see if the work-around(s) discussed in this thread help your freeze issues.

Don’t turn off Wi-Fi in 10.9! (And how to recover a frozen Mac if you do)

BTW - I worked my way through three tiers of Apple technical support and they had not yet heard of this issue, so please reach out to them to push for a solution, as it's not in 10.9.1. :-(

Regards,

Ira
