Mavericks installation hangs on 'less than one minute'

My Mavericks installation isn't going as expected.

After the initial install, my 10.8 2010 Power Mac rebooted to complete the installation. It hung on the grey screen with the flying pizza for around 40 minutes before the 'Completing Inatallation' window appeared. Now it is hung on 'Less than a minute remaining'

I've read on a number of forums that tis is 'normal' and can take anywhere up to an hour.

It's been on my screen now for two hours and forty minutes ...

I'm unsure what to undertake.

Little Snitch is active in the background and keeps asking for prmission to update the address book (which I allow, if I catch the message before it times out).

Still hung.

Any suggestions, anyone?
