Sep 21, 2014 1:43 PM in response to Star Travelerby trudyfromportsmouth,Maybe I did not make myself clear. I purchased the iPad new a couple of years ago. When upgrading to OS8 it defaulkted to the activation screen but I no longer have the original log in details. However I put in a call to Apple Support. They called me back. They were very very helpful and have issued a new password having ascertained I am who I say I am by answering a number of security questions. The lady could not have been more helpful. her name is Therese

iCloudYeah - you didn't indicate that it was a previous email account of yours. That was where the confusion lay. Most folks who have gotten bitten by an Activation Lock from a previous owner indicate that the email is not their own, so we didn't know that when you said it bore no resemblance, didn't know you recognized it and it was simply one you don't use anymore.
Is that what it was?
Cheers,

Oct 20, 2014 7:10 AM in response to Hotshotssnipeby Razdex,So to summarize: it can be done but you have to contact Apple Support.
I researched a bunch online; finally gave up and called Apple. You'll need to provide some proof but they are able to help in most cases. The issue I had was a student at a school where I do tech support linked the iPad to an iCloud account. The student was not identified so I was stuck. Apple Support asked for some proof of purchase, etc. I'm at that step now but it sounds like if it can be found then they are able to help me.
I'll follow up with the results.

as long as the AppleID it is locked with is yours and you can prove it.
If you purchased device from 3rd party, you will not be able to get it unlocked.
Also, to prevent this problem (and others) in the first place, rather than creating new AppleID, just update your current AppleID.

Oct 21, 2014 6:39 PM in response to Hotshotssnipeby atqooh,Apple removed my comment, there is no transparency.
anyhow, i will repeat my reply with some change..
I bought ipad2 since 3 years ago, and there is no email for activation, it just needed for appstore.
all shop store in my country bought ipad's, iphone's and ipod's with installing a lot of programs as service only. in that case, the owner shop must be add his email to install programs from app store.
now, when i upgrade my ipad it ask me for activation !!!!
here, i don't know what that mean, i went to apple vendor in my company to help me in this case, they ask me about invoice and 100 USD to change activation email.
Apple force me to buy a new ipad yesterday.
Actually, i don't know what is that mean !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .
sorry, this is truth

How can you not know your own email and password, write it down before you lock yourself out of the new one.

If you don't know your own email address, you shouldn't be using computer equipment.

Oct 22, 2014 4:16 PM in response to atqoohby Star Traveler,You don't have to ask Apple. You can ask officials in cities and the police departments in cities, who have asked the various companies (not just Apple) to install these kinds of "cutoff" procedures to "TAKE AWAY THE VALUE OF THEFT".
It's not about "recovery" or "catching the thief" ... it's about getting to the point where everyone will know that if I take an iPad that doesn't belong to me, it will be ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS to me. It will do me absolutely no good to take it! THAT is the purpose of this procedure.
And there are already "LAWS" on the books asking for this "type" of process. Apple happens to be one of the first to implement it. Apple is often "ahead of the crowd" in many things, and they are "ahead of the crowd" in making an iPad absolutely worthless for someone to take.
Your "story" of what happened will INFORM many others that it's "useless" to take an iPad, because I'll never be able to use it. That's what your story is worth now!

Than ask the person that owns the email address.

Oct 22, 2014 4:31 PM in response to atqoohby Star Traveler,Here's the relevant Apple Support document on that "old e-mail" ...
Find My iPhone Activation Lock: Removing a Device from a Previous Owner's Account
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4515
AND ... if you don't know a thing about that old e-mail address, then you need to go back to that "seller" ... the person or business that sold you the machine ... because THEY are the problem, and not Apple. THEY are the one who gave you a machine that you CANNOT USE. I would demand that THEY give you your money back for that machine!
