Companies, U.S. Supreme Court rulings to the contrary, are not human beings. The human beings who work for them are frequently bound by policy. Apple will in fact, help people with this issue under specific cirumstances.

I observed that my parents have a hard time with passwords. Wish that there was some way of displaying complete passwords when entered.

To be correct, California has passed a law requiring "kill switches" on cell phones sold in California.

If you want to keep the information on the iPad, then you might have to contact the owner and make him log out of his account.

That's correct. That's why I have all ID and password information in a safety deposit box. I update the info every three months.

There have been anecdotal reports that Apple will unlock with the appropriate proof of ownership and proof of the owner's death and proof that you are the legitimate heir. Whether or not an iPod is worth that sort of effort is something only you can decide.
