Feb 17, 2015 3:09 AM in response to shahgeetradersby petermac87,Without the owners ID there is no way of using this device. Try to get a refund if you cannot contact the original owner.

Mar 10, 2015 9:05 AM in response to Hotshotssnipeby chastd,I understand the debate about anti-theft and all, but I have a different situation. I work tech support for a school district, and am looking at an iPad that the previous user set up and tied to a personal Apple ID rather than the school ID. I have no way of retrieving the account info from the original user. This iPad is now useless to me even though we are the legal owners of the device. There needs to be a way around this.

Mar 10, 2015 9:16 AM in response to chastdby Roger Wilmut1,Take it to an Apple Store (make an appointment) together with the original receipt to prove you are indeed the original owner.

Mar 10, 2015 9:11 AM in response to chastdby deggie,Given the length of this thread I can understand why you didn't want to read all the posts, but you just need to provide Apple with proof of purchase of the device and they will reset it. You might also ask them for help on configuring the school devices so this doesn't happen again.

Mar 10, 2015 12:02 PM in response to Hotshotssnipeby chastd,I started reading at the beginning and quit after several pages of snarky comments. Thank you for the information. I don't think getting proof of ownership will be a problem, but getting to an Apple Store is a bit of a challenge. We're at least 1 hour away from the nearest store. Once I get the documentation in order I'll call Apple Support. It appears that this only becomes an issue if the user turns on Find My iPad, is that correct?

Mar 10, 2015 12:12 PM in response to chastdby Phil0124,Correct, but if Find My iPad was not turned on, then what is the problem? You can simply restore the iPad to factory defaults using iTunes, or your device Management software if your school is using one and set it up it again as you require.
Activating find My iPad enables Activation lock. Which is the cause of gripe, and moaning in this thread. Because it cannot be bypassed without the original Apple ID.

Mar 10, 2015 1:53 PM in response to chastdby rccharles,You can set up your own apple id for the ipad & turn on the activation lock. You can have one, two, or three apple ids per ios device. I assume only one apple id can turn on activation lock, but have not tried more. Guess I should.
Another way of avoiding activation lock problem is to enroll your devices in the DEP facility. This locks the idevice to an MDM. Meraki is a free mdm.
"This document offers guidance on some important considerations for getting the most out of your iOS deployment." Covers: Prepare your infrastructure. Set up devices. Configure and manage devices. Deploy apps and content. Plan for support.

Quick overview of zero-touch MDM enrollment, DEP

Consider DEP, Device Enrollment Program. Use VPP, Volume Purchase Program. Select an MDM, Mobile Device Management.

Mar 10, 2015 2:33 PM in response to Phil0124by chastd,Unfortunately, we don't use a DEP, and our users take great liberties in what they do with the devices. The previous user turned on Find My iPad without understanding the ramifications.

Why would ghe care about it after he turns it in or leaves the company. Thereare no ramifications for him...
Write it into company policy and have it signed by employees when issuing iPads and they will understand and be concerned about the ramifications (such as being charged for the device).

You can also ship the iPad to Apple. Call to make arrangements - 800-275-2273 in the U.S.A. and I think Canada. Be forewarned that they will try to charge you for the phone call so be prepared to explain your situation with few words.
