Q: How can I bypass the previous owners password on my iPad?

I bought a second hand iPad 4th gen the other day. It looked to be ready for me to set up the iPad, but when I got homw to try it, there was a screen saying, "This iPad is currently linked to an Apple ID (S*****@hotmail.com). Sign in with the Apple ID that was used to set up this iPad." So my question is, how can I get by this? I don't have the sellers information, so I can't contact him.

I work for a casino in Las Vegas and help the Lost and Found Department in wiping devices not claimed. I also am responsible as the Manager of IT for PCI compliance. This article came up and it's just what I needed. Many thanks!!!!

Unfortunately, you're expressing gratitude for a solution that, quite simply, won't work!

Guess you didn't see the part in this thread about when a Restore is done (putting it in DFU Mode, reset to Factory Settings, whatever you want to call it), the only result is that you will be required to put in the Activation Lock passcode before it will proceed with the actual Retore....

    Sorry,

i got my iPad from my deceased brother. So, what? I can either hold a seance, or throw the iPad in the trash?  I guess I should blame my brother... It was very a**hole-ish of him not to give out his password before his untimely death.

Nice way to honor your brother. Why get get the executor of his estate take the iPad, proof of purchase and his death certificate to the Apple Store and see if they can help you.

The issue of digital legacy is very real. And very new. Most people don't think to leave a list of security credentials for things like their electronic devices, social media accounts, email accounts, all things their families might find very important. None of us know when we are going to die. Everyone should have an updated will, instructions for what they want for a funeral and, yes, lists of bank accounts, electronic accounts, passwords. It is indeed a final act of love toward one's family. And very hard for many people to think about. Honor your brother by learning from his mistakes.

My condolences for your loss. I, too, lost a brother far sooner than it seemed I should have.

Can anyone help me?  I restored my iPad via iTunes and now its asking me for me.com account to activate it.  I'm the original owner, the problem is the me.com account it claims was used to activated this iPad isn't one that I've ever had.  Suggestions?

Take proof of ownership along with ipad to your nearest Apple store and let them sort it out.

Either the Base Exchange at Ft Belvior or from Apple. I looked on apple.com but they only go back 18 months.  This was 4 years ago.

I can remember where I bought things 4 years ago. If it was from the Base Exchange it is possible it was reboxed. It is also possible someone used your iPad and set it up using their Apple ID for some reason and never changed it.

If you purchased it from Apple you can call them and they can look up your purchase.

I believe that you have run into the activation lock.

This means you cough up the password.  Could go through the lost password process to see if you could change the password.

    --

    or

-- you have apple resend the activation lock.  They require proof of ownership.

Don;t know if this stuff would qualify.

Could you contact your credit card company to get a duplicate of your bill?  Maybe whoever you bought it from would have a copy of your receipt.  Maybe Apple would check to see who owns the account?  Did you sign up for apple care?

Describes what the activation lock does:

Thanks Robert...at least your are trying to help unlike others who assume you're a thief.  Unfortunately when you move around a lot **** gets lost and thrown away.
