Q: How can I bypass the previous owners password on my iPad?

I bought a second hand iPad 4th gen the other day. It looked to be ready for me to set up the iPad, but when I got homw to try it, there was a screen saying, "This iPad is currently linked to an Apple ID (S*****@hotmail.com). Sign in with the Apple ID that was used to set up this iPad." So my question is, how can I get by this? I don't have the sellers information, so I can't contact him.

You can't, read about Activation lock here:

in response to Robertzamora19's response regarding restoring in itunes from DFU mode: (sorry all, I am new to this site)

Nope, I have the same situation where the previous owner will not "come get his found phone" or respond to me whatsoever. But I tried restoring from DFU mode in itunes, it did its thing for like 20 min. said it was restoring and reprogramming to manufacturer's default state or whatever but got an error saying unable to complete or something to that effect and then the screens both went to the sign into the icloud account, and I did this twice! Apple Store. . .  regarding this. . .  is 100% USELESS! But, I can appreciate them securing us legitmate folks from the rat theives out there, I don't get it, being a theif is just as much work as having a job, but their vacations are jail time. What are they thinking, leg work is leg work u might as well do it legitimately and enjoy a "normal" vacation. Does this make any sence? Idunno!

I am new to this like mentioned before, and before I move on to something less stressful I just want to point out to all who is disgruntedlled over their situations, including myself, that Apple is not responsible for this feature, they have done nothing to raise all of the problems here. It is icloud that has brilliantly come up with a security method to stop all of the rat theives from getting into devices and lifting good legitamate consumers information, and selling it to some poor guy who just wants the newest technology for a hefty discount. Apple has nothing to do with the icloud app, and furthermore, icloud and apple have every right to innovate their products to be secure, where do they get these ideas? From the consumers feedback, I am sorry if it ****** off the theives, and even though I can sympathize with those who are legit, like myself, if you want to save the money, next time, including myself, the item should be checked out better and walk away knowing it works 100% not when they get home. Toodles all, I'm out!

Apple has nothing to do with iCloud? Do you not understand what iCloud is? Or are you attempting to be humorous?

In response to Meg St._Clair, I am not going to get into a battle of insults, or degrade anyone that I do not know either. Answer to the latter question is no, I am not trying to be humorous. Now I will be though, I will let you answer your own question re: "Apple has nothing to do with iCloud? Do you not understand what iCloud is?" Now, what kind of question is that if I wrote, "Apple is not responsible for this feature, they have done nothing" AND "It is icloud that has brilliantly come up with. . ."  Maybe since you are not reading posts thoroughly before making snide remarks, I can break it down for you in hopes that you will read this thoroughly and then, like me, move on. . . Reading through all of the posts, I found that a lot of people were placing blame on Apple for coming up with such a feature that is upsetting people. Apple did NOT come up with this feature, iclouds did! Apple and icloud are two seperate companies, possibly affiliation partners what not, whatever, I was simply implying that Apple computers did not put this feature on peoples devices, the owner of the device chose to use the app as extra security to be able to remotely, meaning from a different place from where your device is, secure your data, wipe the data from the device, track its location, lock it with a password, etc. etc. not 100% sure of exact features because I don't use the app. And before you have something smart to say about the latter, I choose not to use iclouds after researching the app, so lets say for personal reasons.

Are we clear here? Is there anything else you would like to question my understanding about?

I would like to state a point, these community sites were designed, I believe, to let people share their experiences, get help with their devices, what not, so we can move on and enjoy the device without spending a lot of time trying to figure it out, maybe someone else had the same problem and shared how they were able to get it working, blah, blah, blah, whatever the case may be, but not to try and make people feel like they are stupid or hear someone  boast how intelligent they are by belittling someone. I could have easily replied with, "No, do you know how to read with comprehension? because clearly I stated that Apple had nothing to do with it, and that it was icloud"

    I'm bored, move on. . .

How do u figure? I already stated that Apple has nothing to do with icloud! People are blaming Apple for this feature and they have nothing to do with it. The user chose to use the app, icloud, and people should take it up with icloud not Apple! I believe we are both correct. . .

You are incorrect when you state that Apple and iCloud are two different companies. iCloud is a feature owned and operated by Apple. Activation Lock is a security feature implemented by Apple in response to the thousands of people whose devices are stolen each year. They wanted better protection.

Activation Lock was introduced with the iOS 7 upgrade, and is, in essence, Apple's "kill switch" for stolen devices. The following two articles are Apple articles:

    ACTIVATION LOCK

    Removing Previous Owner from Device

They are about an Apple security feature in iCloud which is an Apple-owned cloud service.

Apple and iCloud are not separate in any way.

    Cheers,

I certainly hope that other device manufacturer's follow Apple's lead and put similar Activation Locks on all devices.  Perhaps then we would be spared these lengthy discussions from folks who have obtained their devices by questionable means and come here looking for a way to get around the lock.  The best way to avoid the situation is to buy from a reputable dealer or make sure that the previous owner has cleared the device from his account.
