Q: How can I bypass the previous owners password on my iPad?

I bought a second hand iPad 4th gen the other day. It looked to be ready for me to set up the iPad, but when I got homw to try it, there was a screen saying, "This iPad is currently linked to an Apple ID (S*****@hotmail.com). Sign in with the Apple ID that was used to set up this iPad." So my question is, how can I get by this? I don't have the sellers information, so I can't contact him.

If you do not know your Mom's Apple ID, use the first link below.

If it is the password for her AppleID that you do not know, use the

    2cd link:

If you forgot your Apple ID  - Apple Support

If you forgot your Apple ID password  - Apple Support

If neither works, you need proof of original purchase from Apple or Apple

authorized iPad reseller showing serial number of her iPad. Take that proof

and the iPad to the nearest Apple store where they may assist you.

For 'inherited' iPads, you also need death certificate and copy of will/

Letter Testamentary (sp?) or other legal proof that you are now the owner

before Apple will assist in removing Activation Lock tied to other than your

    account.

This is a good idea. And because I am not in a hurry for her to die,  I suppose I can take her to an Apple retailer with me and maybe they will accept her identity based on email address on file with Apple and her State ID card.... She hates this verification constantly popping up, and I hate bringing my laptop over to her assisted living center everyday so we can reset her password, but this sounds like a workable idea. thanks!

I do have Power of Attorney, but now that I think about it, there is NO WAY she will ever have saved the original receipt.  She has even thrown her ipad in the trash, if you can believe it. So all I can do is bring the ipad and her to an Apple store, I guess, and see what they can do. It's not really a problem in a big way, just very annoying for her.  (And I work 14 hours a day so it's hard for me to deal with this stuff all the time.)  Thanks for the assist.

Not sure if my first reply went through. Sorry if this is a repeat.

I do have P of T but definitely she will not have saved the receipt.  I wonder how many people actually save these receipts for years (let alone someone with mild dementia.)   I want to thank you for the help.

If she bought it from Apple they may be able to find the receipt.

In addition to what degree suggests above, if the iPad in question was purchased

via credit card or debit card, the financial institution associated with that card should

be able to locate the purchase and provide a copy of the receipt/transaction record.

Ok, this is all good info. and thank you!  I know she won't remember where she bought it, and she has since moved to my state so has opened a local bank account and the family  with P of T has been helping with estate planning and we have closed out credit card accounts, esp those she forgets to pay or can run up crazy balances on my buying the same thing over and over because she forgets she already bought it.  So, going to those instutions may be a no-go.  The rabbit hole gets deeper. LOL.    BUT, I do thank you all very much for the tips. I am sure there is some way yo handle this.  :-)

I guess we can try it.. She won't recall what retailer she used, but maybe she did go to Apple.  At some point I will just have to forget about finding a solution, as they all seem a bit too complicated for our busy lives.  I am thankful for all the great advice.  I hope what you've all contributed will be helpful to others, too. I bet it will.

I have found credit card companies helpful.  You would need to find out approximately when she bought the ipad.

Enter the serial number into this site and you can see the month and year the ipad was built.

    http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html

I not sure what message you are seeing.  I'm surprised you can reset the ipad so she can use it.  Try turning off what ever app is causing the message.  Go into the app store and say you want to perform manual updates.

If a second-hand iOS device has been 'Activation locked' then only the previous owner can unlock it, either by providing you with the account ID and password, or by removing it from his list of devices (as he should have done before selling it) - please see http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4515

If you are unable to contact him to do this then I'm afraid you will not be able to use the device - there is no other way of unlocking it at all. Apple cannot unlock it for you.

You should if possible return it to wherever you bought it and ask for a refund as in this event the device is completely useless.

Any particular reason you're replying to a post that's over two years old with nothing more than criticism of someone expressing their opinion? Do you have any useful technical information?
