Q: How can I bypass the previous owners password on my iPad?

I bought a second hand iPad 4th gen the other day. It looked to be ready for me to set up the iPad, but when I got homw to try it, there was a screen saying, "This iPad is currently linked to an Apple ID (S*****@hotmail.com). Sign in with the Apple ID that was used to set up this iPad." So my question is, how can I get by this? I don't have the sellers information, so I can't contact him.

iPad 4, iOS 7.0.2, White

Actually, the post I was answering DID call people thiefs.  My response was directed to this:

I'm quite happy that thieves can't get into my iPad.

There are places to buy used Apple products where you'd never run into dark corners of Craigslist. Like Amazon, where sellers don't get their money until the buyer is satisfied (or after a couple of weeks have passed, because buyer's can be idiots).

So, if you purchased your iPad legally and ethically, you wouldn't be complaining. I personally have zero sympathy for all of you. It protects the vast majority of iPad users who don't want their stuff to end up on Craigslist.

I no longer have the device. I gave it to a friend who sent it to her mother in Italy. It's an old iPad1- the original. She just want to read email. Another friend is helping her connecting to iTunes to get it set up and it won't let them. So you're saying I should send them my Apple ID to log in & remove? That doesn't sound like a great idea. I deleted the device in iTunes (under the devices allowed to access content) and in iCloud. That should be enough! Ridiculous that Apple essentially bricked this device when I cleared it at my end.

If it is an iPad 1 it can only run iOS 5.1.1 and it doesn't have Activation Lock so there must be some other issue. And you responded to a very old post and I'm not even sure he participates anymore.

As deggie said - it cannot have Activation Lock if it is an iPad 1. How about you provide us with the exact message she is getting and when that message is appearing? That would help with troubleshooting the issue.

    Cheers,
