I cannot think of a reason that Apple would disarm the sorting system in numbers.  In a numbers program this makes no sense whatsoever, because the purpose of such a program would be to sort data.  I have reported this as a bug.  It cannot have been done intentionally.

In my experience, sorting in the current version of Numbers (3.6.1) works well.  This is a very old thread about a previous release.  What are you trying to sort and what kinds of problems are you encountering?

I have a list of names and phone numbers that I made with the numbers program.  I used to be able to sort them alphabetically, but, since a recent update I am no longer able to do this.  There is no reorganize option coming up and when I try to sort, the options of sort ascending and sort descending are greyed out and not accessible.

That's strange.  There's no longer any "Reorganize" panel.  But you can sort via the dropdown menu next to a column letter.  Or in the 'Sort & Filter' panel at the right.  If the 'Sort Ascending' and 'Sort Descending' are greyed out perhaps you have an active filter on the table that you need to temporarily deactivate.  Or perhaps you've hidden some rows?  Or perhaps you have merged cells?  (Never merge cells; they're trouble!).

I merged cells.  If that is what caused the damage, how do I unmerge them?  I could not see how to do this, so I deleted the merged cells, but that did not solve the problem.  I still cannot reorganize or sort.

To unmerge cells select all the cells in the table, then in your menu choose Table > Unmerge All Cells.

Before doing that in your working document you might try sorting a new test table in which you haven't merged any cells, to get a feel for how it works (it's easy).

When I select Table I do not get the option to unmerge cells.  Instead I just get: 'Headers & Footer', Table Name, Tale Font Size, Table Outline, Outline table name, Gridline, Alternating Row Colour, Row & Column Size.  No option for unmerge cells.

Did you first select all the cells in the table before going to the Table menu?

Select the cells you want to sort, excluding title rows

Top right of app, select Sort & Filter

On the sort tab, choose Sort Selected rows

Then choose which column you want to sort by and how (Ascending/Descending)- it will sort automatically, otherwise click Sort now

You can add more columns by clicking add column...I'm using version 3.6.1
