Epson Scan does not work with Mavericks

I have an Epson Stylus SX600FW all-in-one.

The Epson Scan software does not work with Mavericks, so I canb't use the scanner. I have updated to the latest versio of Epson Scan from the Epson web site. it still does not work. I expect Apple has to provide driver files. maybe it's something else. Does anyone know the annswer?

For now, it appears we'll have to content ourselves with Image Capture. I went to the Drivers & Downloads section for my scanner like you did and it just says to use Software Update, which installed the updated drivers but not the scanning software. Hopefully an update from Epson is in the works, since they've always updated up to Mountain Lion.

Make sure your scanner is on. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners

If you've been using your scanner before the update, then you should see your scanner in the left-hand sidebar. (If not, you'll have to add it by clicking on the + sign.) Click on Open Scanner. It will scan, but I would rather not have to go to System Preferences to scan.

Solution - use application Image Capture, a default Mac app in your Applications Folder. Drag it to your Dock. Launch application. You will find your scanner under Devices. VOILA!

It's not the same Epson Professional scan window I'm accustomed to using. It works through Image Capture. The Scan interface is much cleaner.

Perhaps you are misunderstanding the problem.

Yes, the scanners will still work using Apple's Image Capture software. However this is not the solution we require.

Myself, and many others have always used Epsons Scan Utility. This gives the slightly more professional user much more control on their scans, ie, Full Auto Mode (for automatic control of scan settings), Home Mode (for scanning film and more control over scan settings, including Digital Ice), Professional Mode, (for full control over all scan settings), plus many more advantages.

Usually when an update is made to the mac OS Epson release a software update, if required.

For some reason, this time, with the introduction of Mavericks, Epson seem content to wipe their hands of the problem, leaving myself and other Epson scanner users feeling frustrated and cheated.

I have a lexmark and when mountain lion came in the scanner would not work for a while. I contacted Lexmark who said that Apple did not want 3rd party software and wanted people to use their own Image Capture - however Lexmark did find a bit of software that solved my problem.

I think it is Apple who have caused this problem and prehaps if they were to improve their image capture a lot of people would be happier.

No, I am not misunderstanding the problem. I have used Epson scanners for many years now. Just recently I decided to switch from Microsoft/Windows and bought an IMac. At the same time I bought a new Epson printer and the scanner software worked fine with the same type of control as Windows. With Mavericks and image capture the control is not the same at all, but I have found that if you follow the procedure I mentioned the scan window that opens is much more advanced than image capture.

Trust me, I am just as annoyed as you that a new update like this can stop 3rd party devices working. I hope that a fix will be issued soon. The worrying part of all this is that some people say that it is done intentionally by Apple.

Have today received a mail from Epson Customer Services:

"The scanner software is currently not available; we are in the process of releasing drivers. These will be posted on the website, keep checking our site over the next few days".

If anyone happens to see any announcement please post for us all to see.

Hopefully there will soon be light at the end of the tunnel.
