Q: 10.9 (Mavericks) External Display Problem

Recently I made the upgrade to OS X 10.9 and now I start to having problems with the resolution of my sceen. I have a LG Flatron E2250V and it work perfectly in OS X 10.8.3, the recomend resolution for this display is 1920x1084 but right now the system only give me 1600x1200 option, thereby is in a wrong frecuency for my screen.

About 3 month ago I try to upgrade the sistem to OS X 10.8.4 and I had the same problem.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

there's no posting from "G Webb".

    Maybe it was deleted?

Someone can tell me the temporary solution for this issue?

It's funny how when Mavericks released, during all the betas it was all going fine now I'm stuck without seeing the menu bar and the dock on my second monitor since all my resolutions are ****** ones even using the ALT trick.

This is ******* me off to unknown levels, as I'm wondering why it suddenly bugged out. That new second monitor support really *****, not being able to put a window on both monitor is a joke.

    I hope this gets fixed

    @tomfromwkup

The problem is always there, or your second monitor is losing resolution from time to time?

I had that problem and fixed it by detaching and reattaching the MiniDVI-VGA. cable

But even better was to reset the Energy Saver system preference to the default setting.

Now I experience that issue only one time a week, or less.

But I also wrote to the Apple feedback hoping for a complete fix: https://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

It's still there, the resolution is too high for my monitor. Check out how it looks:

    IMG_6938.jpeg

You can't see the menu at all and cannot see the base of the Dock. This is really annoying.

I'll try your trick and will notify Apple about it as well, thanks for the help!

Here is a summary of my reasearch concerning problems under Maverics with setting proper resolution for 2560x1440 monitors when they are rotated to the PORTRAIT position (pivot 90 deg).

    [...]

    My research:

So far I have tested with OS X 10.9.2 (SUCCESS – getting 1440x2560px in rotated mode; FAILURE - getting only lower resolutions):

    – 3 MacBookAIr4,2 (13'' mid-2011) – FAILURE (all 3)

    – 1 MacBookAir6,2 (13'' mid-2013) – SUCCESS

    – 1 MacBookAir6,1 (13'' mid-2013) – SUCCESS

    – 1 MacBookPro8,1 (13'' early-2011 or late-2011) - FAILURE

    – 1 MacBookPro8,2 (15'' early-2011 or late-2011) - SUCCESS.

I also booted OS X 10.9.2 from an external disk connected (with the same cable and monitor):

    – to my MacBookAir  – FAILURE

    and then

    – to MacMini - SUCCESS.

mprPL can't possibly get enough love for all that research.

If anyone has results for a 2012 iMac 27 with the 680MX upgrade, I'd love to hear. I'm holding off on getting another display for want of this information.

Any chance you can indicate the Mac Mini model you successfully tested?  I have a Mac Mini 5,3 and haven't had any success trying to rotate either an HP ZR2740w or a Shimian QH270 under any of the versions of Mavericks.

Mac mini I mentioned in my post of May 2, 2014, as behaving correcly with vertical positioned 2560x1440 monitor under OS X 10.9 Maverics is "Late 2012" model. I think, however, that the deciding factor is the model of the video card used. All MacBooks that behave correctly have Intel 4000 1024 MB video card, I think. And the same card is in Mac mini mentioned above. On the contary, my Macbook Air, which does not behave correcctly, has Intel 3000  384 MB video card.

Few days ago I made some testing of my MacBook Air with the 2560x1440 HP ZR2740w monitor in horizontal and vertical position on request of Apple engeeniers and I sent them resulting files. Let's hope they find the bug.

Thanks for the info.  I've got a 2011 model which has an Intel 3000 384 MB video card, which as you say, has the display bug.

If the problem is with models with Intel 3000 384 MB video card as I suspect, then it is not the a bug in the card but a bag in Mavericks. We all know that such cards worked (and still works) well with Lion and Snow Leopard

I have a mid 2012 MACBOOK Pro 15 inch with KOGAN 2560x1440 external monitor connected to display port on mac.  Things worked fine until my first install of Mavericks - which started to create Mosaic patterns on my screen.  Updating to Mavericks 10.9.2 caused the system to crash frequently after hibernation and at this point I lost my Hi_res display output. This monitor uses a separate input for this resolutionand a separate input for the 1920x1080p output - which still works fine (but now I have the same lo-resolution 1080p res i was trying to avoid by buying this monitor).

I have had my mac serviced (they replaced the logic board) which has fixed the mosaic screen distortion and the crashing on hibernation) -

I have ruled out a problem with my Mac outputting at the higher resolution (it works fine on Apple's own branded Hi-res monitor), I have ruled out problems with the monitor as it still works at the hi resolution (2560x1440) on my Windows 8 PC and it still works fine on non-Mavericks macs.

I have tried all the tricks in the forums - where i am able to.(holding alt, booting in safe mode, different cables, third party utilities - etc - I don't want to go back to Mountain Lion becuase that would be a pain in the *** to do)

I have called Kogan - who have listed it as a problem Apple needs to fix.

What I would like to know is:

When will Apple fix this problem?

as it is clearly an Intentional or Unintentional bug in the OS that has occurred (for me at least) between Mavericks 10.9.1 and 10.9.2 and does not affect Apple branded external hi-res monitors.

For those of you out there who have gone to the trouble and investment on a Hi-res external monitor you did it for a reason - It makes you more effective/efficient.  To have that 20%+ of screen pace removed is like reducing your dexteriry by removing a finger.....

I am very sorry, but Mavericks 10.9.3 update DOES NOT FIX the bug I wrote about in the case of my MacBookAir Late-2011 and HP ZR27040w 2440x1440 pixel monitor in vertical position. Below is the proof:

Problem now fixed for Kogan 2560 x 1440 external monitors using 10.9.3 update.  External monitor is now working correctly again.  Mac Book Pro 15" (2012)

10.9.3 update plus latest Startech driver for Mac: 2.1.51922 (beta in the zip file) fixed the problem I had with two usb-connected HDMI monitors plus a displayport-connected 2560x1440 Nixeus.   Problem was random monitor arrangement and only one random HDMI monitor was active at one time.

    Yay.
