This is beyond frustraating. So I can no longer sync my contacts and calendar between iPhone and Mac with the cable. OK, I tried iCloud, enabling it on both phone and Mac. Then tried editing records on each, but it doesn't update the other device. So I've tried turning disabling and enabling iCloud contacts on the phone and it brought over 222 out of 717 contact records. Great. I have tried this many times. Each time I disable iCloud on the phone it takes about 20 minutes as it says "Turning off Contacts" and at least 30 minutes to turn them back on. I guess I should post this question to an iCloud thread, but does anyone here have an idea?

Hello Wendy,

Apparently, the OS X Mavericks upgrade has eliminated the ability to sync or replace via USB cable calendar and contact data on iPhones and iPads. It would appear that Apple is mandating the use of iCloud even though many of us prefer or need the USB cable option. This article from Apple might be of interest.

It would seem that rather a lot of us are disappointed with Apple over this issue. For some of us, myself included, the nature of our calendar and contact data prohibits the use of iCloud or any other cloud service. And then there are the issues of privacy, personal choice, and loss of convenienice.

My best advice is that we continue to let Apple know that we are not happy with what appears to be an attempt to force our data into their iCloud while eliminating our choices for syncing. Personally, I have already advised my colleagues on campus to avoid the Mavericks and iTunes updates. And I am looking forward to reading the tech blogs as word of the sync changes and restrictions gets around.

Hi,

For securities reasons I don't use any cloud - exception made for a cloud where the service provider is under the same law as myself, i.e. under my control.

As many other Apple users I installed the new OS X Mavericks, IOS 7.0.3 and iTunes 11.1.2 - and as as many other users I discovered that the info tab has disappeared, so a local calender + contacts sync is no more possible.

I don't remember that this new procedure was explicitely mentioned by Apple...

We could continue to let Apple know that we are not happy - but I think that the best way in Europe would be that the European Commission takes this point.

Hello carloLux,

I agree with you and hope the EU will take an interest in this issue. EU privacy laws seem to be rather more comprehensive and rational than what we have in the US. And that is unfortunate for us. However, as a faculty member of a public university in the US, I am required by federal law to protect the privacy of my students and their data. Accordingly, I will not use any cloud service that is not bound by the same law, which is to say under either my control or the control of the university. I have advised my colleagues of the issues and trust the academic community in the US will take notice.

To the best of my knowledge, Apple did not mention the elimination of the local calendar and contact sync option in their announcement of the new and free operating system upgrade.

Best.

I did a reboot thinking the missing tab was some sort of new install glitch. Everything about Mavericks shows wonderful forward thingking EXCEPT THIS. I find it hard to imagine the mindset of the decision makers on the move to elimate direct sync. A very foolish decision. Bring it back. It's not a feature. It's a computing necessity for some of us. BRING IT BACK!

Along with every other concern noted above, I fix client iphones mail accounts from time to time. account corruptions of one sort or another. I used to just delete accounts and "replace information on this phone" in the info tab to correct any configuration issues. CAN'T DO THAT ANYMORE! What a time consuming pain now.
