Q: What has been lost in Numbers 3.0 upgrade?

Has anyone got a list of features that has been lost in the new version of Numbers?

I am aware (and disappointed) that the useful Categories feature has gone (I have requested this feature back on relevant Apple page). I think I also saw that Print view had disappeared.

What else has gone? I make extensive use of filtering and sorting - if those features have been watered down then I think I may not bother updataing.

Thanks in advance,

Simon.

    Barry,

No need to fabricate a numeric value, just use the text filter. It will recognize the logic result as text. So, TRUE (the logic state) equals TRUE (the string).

Thanks - that's useful to know.

The TRUE/FALSE comes from one of my columns being a Checkbox. The column in called "Reqd" and on user-entry you may tick the checkbox. When applying a filter in Numbers 2 I simply select Column "Reqd", select condition "Is" and then type in the word "True" in the third box. That seems to pick up checkboxes.

    Simon,

Which data type are you using in the filter?

    Jerry,

Not sure I understand your question. I'm still in Numbers 2. The column I am filtering is filled with Checkboxes - tick/unticked.

In the Re-organize panel I can select the column "Reqd" whilst creating a filter. I then select the condition "Is" and type in the word True in the third box. If I knew how to take I screen shot I'd enter it below.

    Does that answer your question?

    Simon.

Sorry Simon, I was in the Version 3 mindset.

In case you are interested, here's what the v3 panel looks like:

Here's my updated list. I'd really appreciate it if anyone who knows how to do the things in this list with Version 3 would reply with an explanation. I checked all these reports out as well as I could, but I certainly could have missed something.

Not a missing feature - but an issue.

Numbers (and Pages I believe) no longer hold the Zoom ratio of the document you are working on - so when you re-open it after saving you have to re-zoom.

More annoying - it does not go back to the Sheet you were working on. So if you have a document with lots of sheets, it goes to Sheet 1 - not the last one you were working on (as the old 'better' version did).

Unless I am doing something wrong?

Nice list, Jerry.  Thanks for reminding us how the app is so sleek and "streamlined" now!

    My two cents.

Reorganize Panel gone, no multi-level sort.

The multi-column filter isn't too bad. But lack of multi-level support is a problem. My workaround:

Say you have columns A,B, and C and you want to sort by B then by C then by A. Add a column D with formula =B&C&A. Then sort by column D.

Header text is used in cell references and you can’t turn this “feature” off

I think you can turn it off; in General Preferences uncheck 'Cell References: Use header names as labels'

Scatter Charts no longer can accept Dates on X axis

Dates can’t be used for X-Axis values in Scatter Charts

It seems to accept dates for the X-axis in scatter charts no problem.  The dates just don't display correctly on the chart. I reported it as a "bug."

Another penny forgot to throw in..

References now don’t follow sorted rows as they did before.

For most purposes that's an improvement, not a loss, I think. Simplifies a lot of formulas.

Thanks for all the input, everyone. Your comments here saved me a LOT of time and trouble. I make extensive use of the now-missing features... changing to 3.0 would have been a disaster!

Yes, It is possible to go back 'cos I've just done that, although I kept the previous Numbers in an iWork folder in Applications so it wasn't replaced as such.

If you've tried Numbers 3 out on an original document (which I did, unwisely as it turns out!) you'll have to revert it to the version created with the earlier Numbers even if you haven't saved any of the changes made, but that's a doddle.

I've consigned Numbers 3 to Trash (have put it in a locked folder just in case Apple decides to bring back an editable Print View and I need to upgrade, as the App store is showing that it's installed) and have gone back to version 2.3.

    Jerry,

If you haven't already, don't forget to add to your list the removal of Insert>Date & Time.

I can only encourage everyone to send feedback to Apple:

    --> http://www.apple.com/feedback/numbers.html

I'm well aware that it won't change anything within the next few days, weeks or maybe even months... but if they recieve hundreds and thousands of negative feedback reports they might actually know that they should bring back some features.

    Hi!

I heavily relied on auto-completion in Numbers cells. How can I restore this feature?

    Thank you
