Quicktime on Mavericks outputs stuttering audio.

Also some of my video files need "converting" before they play on quicktime. Thus I'm using VLC for now. No stuttering problems with iTunes sound or audio. When will Quicktime be fixed? And is anyone else having these problems?

As long as iOS is their main developmental push right now, and it is, Apple won't likely address this until there's a new release of hardware.

Perhaps it will be dealt with when the new MacPro comes out.

Until then, the best you can do is use the QuickTime 7.6.6 and the Perian codec pack.. with the A52/AC3 extras installed.

If you dig back through this thread, I *think* I may have posted the links for the installers to get you back on your feet here. If not, it's in several other places, just search by my username to find it..

Follow the installation instructions and it should work just fine.

Perian and QT7 will stop the converting and allow you to view quicktimes regularly. However you will still be unable to preview them which is KILLING me at work! I'd love for them to fix this ASAP so I can open and preview quicktimes without them converting.

For reference, I'm trying to play quicktimes with the Avid DNX HD codec if anyone has suggestions or a way to resolve this issue.

Alas, no Miguel, the thumbnails are done for with the QT7, since it is the deprecated movie player. The only saving benefit of using it is the non-conversion of videos.

QuickTime X is now nested into the OS and the entire framework for video is a different set of instructions. In effect, QuickTime 7 is treated the same by the OS as VLC is - as a third-party aplication - so it's not got the integration with the Finder.

As to the Avid codecs, the issue *may* lie with the installer, it did a double-start on me which is a sign that it's a 32-bit program.

I got an install to take with Pacifist - http://www.charlessoft.com - and it loaded them into the Library/QuickTime folder, though that is not where the Perian codecs are, so that looks like it is the default for the QTX player.

Since I do not have any Avid hardware of files, I cannot try, but PTO214, could you give it a shot and see what comes of it?

If you have the codecs installed and they don't work with QTX, you may want to try moving them to the same QuickTime components folder that the Perian codecs went into, which would be the System/Library/QuickTime folder. Here's a pic of both so you can see..

I think at that point, you'll be using them with QT7.

As far as QuickTimeX and the whole thumbnails thing, I have a sinking feeling that Apple is closing off a lot of the OS to make it more iOS-like, so a lot of the nifty functions people use and expect will only work with the 'official' Apple-sanctioned applications/filetypes. 😟 Booo!

Good luck and let us know what you find!

Thanks again Deb. I tried to reinstall the Avid codecs using Pacifist and, in effect, it was able to open the package. However, it did not make any difference, since there were no changes in the package and I already had the codecs. Files using Avid codecs cannot be previewed nor played without prior conversion in Mavericks, unless you use Adobe Bridge or a similar program (I just tried, and Bridge plays the files just fine).

Regarding QT 7, I am afraid it does not solve all the issues. In addition, Mavericks will not allow you to install it, so you can only launch it if you already had it in your computer. Otherwise, I guess you would first have to uninstall QT 10, but I'm not sure what issues this may cause in turn.

I hope Apple will not follow merely the iOS path. What sense would it make to buy the new Mac Pro (as we were actually planning to do) if you cannot use files from other platforms? For professionals, Maverick's flaws are staggering. They are a major step backwards. Pretending there is only the Apple universe out there in the world makes no sense at all, and hugely reduces the difference between a Mac and a PC.

Huh. I wonder why you're not getting QT7 to install. For the love of all that is holy, do NOT remove/delete QTX. It causes more isses than not.

I took a clean install of Mavericks on an empty partition on my MacBook, and since I cannot stand QTX (and I have a Pro key) I went straightaway to the 7.6.6 download and it went in no problem.

Try Pacifist on the QT 7 installer and see what that does. Did you upgrade from Snow Leopard? You my have an old installer reciept that is kicking around in your system folder and that may be preventing the re-install.

Hi again Deb. I upgraded to Mavericks from Mountain Lion. When I tried to install QT 7 (I had it in another computer, but not here), the installer said I could not because QTX was already in the system.

I have tried now with Pacifist (great software, by the way). Apparently, Pacifist was being able to install QT 7 package. However, it prompted a message saying that the QT app already existed, and asked if I wanted to replace it. I am not sure whether that means it would substitute QT 7 for QTX, and in such a case what this might cause, so I stopped the installation.

No, unfortunately it's not there. I have even tried a search with both the Finder and Disk Inventory X, and only QTX shows up. Too bad... Thanks anyway!

By the way, a friend of mine tells me it has always been the same with Mac OS updates. To be honest, I had never had these kind of problems before, but let's hope tthings will go back to normal at the latest with the new Mac Pro release. Otherwise, it will be Mountain Lion again for us!

Deb, just in case it is of interest to you: I reinstalled Mountain Lion 10.8 and then updated to 10.8.5. Oddly enough (updates are definitely tricky), QT 7 disappeared from my computer (this was the computer where I had it installed).

However, I was able to download it again from apple's page and, this time, it was placed at the utilities folder. In sum, it is mavericks that won't let you install QT 7. In previous OS, you can still download QT 7 and have it together with QTX.

Miguel,

That is SO strange. I installed QT 7 right off the bat when I put Mavericks into the empty partition on my MacBook.

IIRC, QT 7 isn't installed by default and hasn't been starting with Snow Leopard (where it is an optional install along with X11) and as I've had a Pro Key since oh, the beginning of time, I've never used QTX.

Cant stand it actually. Functionally, it's been too light for my tastes.

I wonder why you couldn't get QT 7.6.6 to install to Mavericks on your machine.. That doesn't make sense at all, considering that Apple is still selling the Pro option for the app.

Weird.
