Q: Where are guides and the side ruler in the new version of pages?

I just updated to the new version of Pages and all of the guides on my documents have disappeared.  There also seems to be no layout mode when creating a new document.  Is this for real??????  These features are the reason I used Pages.  How am I supposed to setup my documents? Should I just guess at where things should line up?????

Vertical Ruler does seem to be gone. The Arrange pane still has X-Y coordinate controls for position.

We still have Placeholders for repeated use of layouts. Not defending, just looking through the menus myself.

I'm also hunting for these features.  I desperately need the guide lines!

Guide lines are really important for me too. The frustrating thing is that I just bought Pages for two Macs in June and just now starting to train some volunteers to use the program to take over a few parts of my job. And without the guide lines, I can't see any way to use this program for the work I do. Even if I could find a workaround, the lack of vertical ruler means no way to make anything uniform. All my templates I made this summer are now worthless.

There really seems to be no middle ground anymore in desktop publishing software. There is only bare bones software with no options and few customizations or very expensive software with too many settings that is overkill for more. I hope they reconsider and put those guide lines and vertical ruler back.

The loss of side rulers and guides is a big problem for me, too. I would like that functionality restored.

I too desperately need the guide lines and vertical rulers!

I've deleted Pages 5 and will be stuck with Pages '09 until they add these features back in. I'm so disappointed with Apple that they crippled software that I've used for 4 years. Instead of putting in the work to make the iOS versions feature compatible they dumbed down the Mac versions. That just seems lazy to me.

I'm also looking for the ruler to the left of the page! For the desgin work I do these guidelines and rulers are critical! Also, they've removed the 'Times New Roman' font which throws other formatting in previous documents out....grrrrr c'mon Apple, build on the past don't remove it you goofs!!

...And another thing, it used to list your recently used fonts at the top of the font list. That is now gone and you have to manually search out each font again...grrrrr.

Ok... Hope I can help here,

For guide lines, when you click the Pages tab, then goto preferences, then to rulers, there is an option for Alignment Guides. You have the option to show guides at object center and to show guides at object edges.

The vertical ruler has been removed, at least for now. I do believe, however, that Apple will add this feature back eventually(hopefully within the next few updates). As for layout view when making a new document... do you mean the layout view when you click View and then "Show Layout"? That feature is still there, at least for me.

The 'Times New Roman Font' still exists and has not been removed. Perhaps the formatting error here may be a bug. As for the recently used fonts, I believe this feature has been removed. It's a shame, the recent fonts at the top of the font list were extremely useful for me.

    Did that help at all?

I do believe that people who do believe Apple will add back features they have deliberately removed, believe that in vain.

Peter is not entirely correct; since he posted, Apple HAVE promised to put back some of the features they've removed. It remains to be seen if they return them all, and of course, we're being made to wait up to 6 months. In the mean time, Pages 4.3 is entirely usable and should be found in your iWork '09 folder. Archive/zip/remove Pages 5 to avoid it being the default app for all .pages documents.

Apple posted this after my previous post:

Some features in upcoming releases in the next 6 months

    Pages

    • Customize toolbar
    • Vertical ruler
    • Improved alignment guides
    • Improved object placement
    • Import of cells with images
    • Improved word counts
    • Keyboard shortcuts for styles
    • Manage pages and sections from the thumbnail view

That is 8 features in 6 months, and this is only promises so far.

Last count there were 78 features removed. That leaves 70 unaccounted for and, with no statement from Apple, up in the air.

You will have to decide how long you are willing to wait and whether to risk your work to Apple's formats which it changes without notice, without explanation and without a smooth upgrade path.

Its a no-brainer really; removing perfectly useful features suggests somewhat of a disconnect.

    Understatement of the year.
