Why No Quick Look with MP4 in Mavericks?

Since upgrading to Mavericks, many movie or video types no longer are available through Quick Look - and must be converted to play through Quicktime. The convertion can take a awfully long time, depending on the movie size.

Why is that - because they worked fine with Mountain Lion.

The most noticeable examples are .MP4's

I too thought Perian might have something to do with it. I removed it - to no avail. Same issue. I have 4 fairly newer iMac 27s - and do a lot of video editing. I tried the same files on all 4 boxes - and they wouldn't quick look - and required converting to open in Quicktime.

They play fine in VLC - but I had to loose the quick look ability. I didn't realize how much I relied on that when sorting through clips.

I know it is a codec issue - and hopefully there is an easy fix. I can't believe they would limit what video types play back on a newer operating system. I have read that several other video types are likewise unplayable without a conversion.

I had the same problem, then I installed Apple's ProApps Quicktime Codecs and that solved the problem. The

update adds the following video codecs for use by QuickTime-based applications:

  • Apple Intermediate Codec
  • Apple ProRes
  • AVC-Intra
  • DVCPRO HD
  • HDV
  • XDCAM HD / EX / HD422
  • MPEG IMX
  • Uncompressed 4:2:2
  • XAVC

I tried the ProApps Quicktime Codec update - to no avail.

I still have a large volume of .mp4 files that won't open in quick look - and require a lengthy conversion to open in Quicktime.

VLC will open the open the files.

This is kind of a big deal for me - because I use my computers for extensive video editing - and this is hurting my workflow.

I am hopeful this will be patched soon.
