Mavericks MacBook Air 2013 Battery Draining

Hello,

I recently installed Mavericks onto my Macbook Air 2013, Haswell, 128GB i5 model

I find that the battery drains very quickly; in general it only shows an estimate of less than 6 hours with just Chrome open. Before it used to be 10-12 hours+. I used to not notice when the battery percentage would go down; now every few minutes I notice it slowly decreasing.

I read that the computer needs time to index the hard drive but I do not see the Spotlight indexing.

What is going on? Does the computer need to go through one cycle of almost draining the battery from full in order to accurately preserve energy?

The computer went from 100% to around 78% over the span of around 2 hours... not good.

Why is my computer showing a decrease in battery life when Mavericks is supposed to increase it dramatically? Typing this message in a span of 10 minutes already dropped my battery life around 1-2%. (No hardware problems; flawless on Mountain Lion)

Thanks,

Sam

I'm having the same problem.

Newer (2 moths old) MBA with 8GB RAM, 256GB HD, i5.

I would get between 8-9 hours of battery on ML, but ever since I upgraded to Mavericks I'm lucky to get 6-7 hours. I did the SMC and PRAM reset but that seemed to do nothing.

Any word from Apple? This seems to be more than an isolated case, since I've found quite a bit of chatter about this on the interwebs.

Same problem as well. 2 months old mid 2013 MBA 128GB Flash, 4GB RAM, i5. Before maverick update, the laptop lasts for 13 hours as advertised and only drains ~3% of battery overnight.

After the maverick update, the battery drains from 100% to 2% overnight in sleep mode with all programs closed and I can feel the heat near the air vent constantly.

Adding on, with low power CPU usage, my laptop gets increadibly hot, especially at the top right corner of the computer.

Please do something about it, Apple.

I spoke to Apple. They're going to do a fresh install of mavericks. Said it was definitely a software issue. They directed me to the Genius Bar.

He asked if I had installed it right away or if I had waited. I tend to be an early adopter so of course, I said I'd installed it right away. He said some info could have been corrupted. I had also done a transfer of info from an old laptop to the new one and some files could have become corrupted with the mavericks install.

We'll see what happens on Tuesday. I did a full backup and interestingly, it's not as bad as it was.

Got the same problem too on my Macbook Air 2013 13"

Spoke with Apple about it through online chat. They told me to do a PRAM reset, that didn't do anything, then an SMC reset, that also didn't do anything. They asked me to do a clean install, that didn't do anything. Now they want me to go into the store and let them do a diagnostic on it, and if they can't figure out the problem, they would probably just replace it as it is only 2 months old. Sad to see that the laptop I bought strictly for its battery life and portability turned out to be a problem when I need it the most, battery life used to be 12-14 hours, and now it is 5-7 hours, have to carry my charger everywhere.

Hope they fix this issue soon

Hey guys,

I justI know how frustrating this must be for everybody...I do notice though that my brightness settings have A LOT to do with the battery time indicator. I know you know but in particular MAVERICKS seems to be much more sensitive to the brightness- for example initially when i unplugged at 100 percent it should 7 or 8 hours, but now at 90 % it's showing 11:47 hours...I've attached a picture...

For those of you who are somehow actually timing the hours with a timer...then I don't know what to tell you...

I've actually have noticed a decrease in power. I usually go to school with 100%, and come back home with 70% doing the same stuff, watching videos, doing homework. After the maverick update, Its been dropping to 40-50%.

Things I used to have running in the background like geektool and bowtie, I removed those when I noticed my battery draining with maverick, but those programs never used alot of power. My backlight is never higher than 3 and my keyboard backlight is never at the max and sometimes its off.

yenno, just thought you should know.

macmacma...

it is accurate (time remaining), only if properly calibrated and set up

You are 100% incorrect on this conjecture, sorry.

I have done exhaustive testing on same on 6 diff. Macs with Mavericks.

SMC reset will show correct battery reading for a short while, however no, "time remaining" is NOT correct currently, and techs. are working on this occurrence. Your experience with Mac has no bearing whatsoever on current time remaining indicator with Mavericks.

"even a broken clock is right 2 times a day" ,...almost such is the case here, rely on %, and NOT on "time remaining" (hours / mins.) currently.

Endless testing shows that accurate time remaining will present itself, for a short time, after a SMC reset, but this is often very short lived.

The quickest methodology to FAULT this reading is to open a high task APP (photoshop, video feed, flash, etc.)

See post on page 10 of this thread.

*Further testing on 3 machines 2 days ago have shows that if a wake from sleep is induced, the "time remaining" on a 50-60% charge will show "20 hours remaining" on 2 diff. macbook Air 2013 13" I5 (very inaccurate of course)

Battery APPS used were:

1. Mavericks resident batt. indicator.

2. coconut battery (coconut doesnt estimate time however but mAh)

3. Battery time v 2 (mAh and % remaining, not time remaining)

4. Battery APP "fruit juice"

*For those receiving ACTUAL LESS battery life, other variables are in play.

Peace 😊

Happily however, my ACTUAL TIME on a full charge on 2 diff. Air (mine and a borrow) has increased an average of 25%
