Q: OS X Mavericks - Awful Performance

Well, here we go again...

Apple releases an updated OS and it turns my Mac which is less than a year old into an underperforming little box of frustration for no apparent reason.  I installed Mavericks last night and the overall performance of my system has taken an absolute nosedive.  Seemingly every operation (booting up, launching apps, playing video/audio, browsing the filesystem, etc) is noticably slower.  I really don't feel like this should be the case considering the hardware I am running on which is listed below:

Mac mini (late 2012):

2.6GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB

1TB Fusion Drive

I literally got this thing (maxed out on specs and $$$) less than a year ago and already Apple's awesome OS update has already devalued it.  Is this the strategy these days?  Release OS updates that run like crap on hardware that isn't even a year old in order to force people to keep purchasing newer hardware?  All of a sudden a system that left nothing to be desired in terms of performance is now exhibiting early-2000s behavior that includes stuttering video/audio, spinning beach balls galore, and apps that sit and bounce in the dock 15 times before it even launches and becomes useable.

Is anyone else seeing this stuff?  The memory and CPU useage on my system looks fine to me so it's tough for me to just blame a bad install for all of this.  I can't see any reason why it's performing so badly now given all of the features Apple bragged about that are supposed to speed up your system (App Nap, Compressed Memory, OpenCL, etc).  This is worse than going from Snow Leopard to Lion, IMHO.

Apple - You can keep your Maps app, tabbed Finder, and the annoying notifications flashing in my face every two seconds if it means that my system will be able to perform well again.  I want my system back.

You need to start you own thread with your information. This is an old thread belonging to someone else and your problems differ.

And you certainly have issues with your install.

    Cheers

Finally a clue about what's going on!

I, too, have experienced horrible performance on one of my Macs since updating to mavericks. It's a mid2010 MacBook Pro 15". Everything, I mean everything--even just opening a new finder window, has been super slow since installing mavericks. We've tried everything except wiping the hard disk and starting from scratch. In fact, I was about to try that, so I connected the macbook to our hub via Ethernet (to facilitate a faster download of the os installer), and suddenly, problems gone! As so as the Mac stopped using its wifi adapter, the system performance became blazing fast. So, I disconnected the Ethernet, turned of wifi, and did some further tests--blazing fast performance (of course, no network connectivity). Apps are opening up quickly, documents open quickly, switching from one Desktop to another is swift--this is how I expect the Mac Pro to behave.

Turned wifi on, and so far the machine is still performing well. I'm going to use it for a while, and see if the performance degrades.

It sure looks like some sort of resource leek in the wifi driver might be to blame... If my guess is correct, we'll see performance take a hit over time...

Amazing, you guys sounds as if you work Apple.

This version of their OS is the absolute worst, not only has it degraded performance to a degree where one might actually concider switching, but it also removes useful features just so Apple, as well as Google and others, can begin to scan your data and sell them to advertisers.

Complaining on the internet is all you can do, providing Apple feedback is a waste of time, trying to get issues resolved by speaking with their tech support is worse.

Little, or no, information about these issues are posted by Apple anywhere, or indeed what Apple intents to do about them.

So customers, you know those that actually pays for their stuff, wenting their frustration in these forums, is quite understandable and completely OK by me. This shows that I am not the only one experincing these issues, and Apple's inability to ptovide support in fixing them!

Try troubleshooting your problems so Mavericks works well for you as it does for the many many millions of other users world wide. You have given no indications of your issues. Steer a new thread and detail your problems.

    Good luck

Great, I am all for solutions, however, though I agree that Google is not the standard of anything and they most certainly break most standards in their IMAP implementaion, they are a big force as they have quite a few users of Gmail and so Apple should work on fixing the issues that their users are experiencing with Mail (which Airmail have done).

I have since I upgraded from 10.8 to Maverick in December 2013 (not a clean install), had the performance issue and much worse when using Mail with GMAIL (which is my company’s mail server so no choice really).

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro dual core 7i with 8GB RAM and a 750GB drive.

I have read many posts, articles and Apple support pages since upgrading, to no awail.

I finally got so frustrated having tried everything I could think off, including speaking to a few supporters at Apple, that I backed up my Mac with Time Machine and did a clean install, not an easy thing by the way.

Then I clean installed my email account and other apps.

I then manually transferred files from my backup drive to avoid unknown files to corrupt Maverick, again something that required use of a terminal window and Unix commands, good luck non tech users!

    Result; none!

Still Mail writes tens of thousands of changes to disk daily, killing performance.

    Apple had absolutely no suggestions.

So this being a place for solutions, I am all ears.

Your problem must be the Virtual memory.

Virtual memory means that the cumputer uses your hard disc as an internal memory.

Everything is written on the harddisc instead of your internal memory.

Restart your computer, clean out outdated plug ins to firefox.

There should be no active Virtual memory.

    Best regards

You sound like an Apple employee trying to defend Mavericks rather then an objective poster. For many of us, Mavericks has major issues.

i very much agree with you, Joe. i really wish there was a way to block the insufferable fanboys on this site, they are nauseating, and extremely unhelpful.
