You haven't been misunderstood, petermac87 just completely ignored the fact that he needs to see the same bug before a weird fix will achieve anything.

I don't doubt that something is going on if toggling wifi makes it run better for both of you, I'd suggest you start a new thread, since this one is falling to pieces with pointless distractions.

You & Stephen should see what is similar about your Macs and network setup, it's possible you have an edge case bug that occurs with certain network hardware, compare to ethernet networking if possible.

Please do not attempt to reply on my behalf Drew. I did not ignore anything and your comment does not make sense. But you sound like you have the complete fix for everyone, so that is great. Medals and points all round!

Sorry to hear that you are having trouble?  With your expereince why not just install Umbuntu or another Linux distro?

What makes you think that is any kind of solution?

Perhaps I should have not only capitalized, but bolded, italicized, and underlined "FRESH INSTALL". A fresh install (after initializing the boot disk) of Mavericks 10.9.2 on two different MBP's yielded problems with:

(1) SMB, using finder

(2) Screen Sharing

(3) MacMail (forgot about this one in my previous post)

This morning I performed a "FRESH INSTALL" of Mountain Lion (10.8.5) and guess what? Absolutely none of the problems arise.

What can I say, dude? That is about as simple of troubleshooting as there is. As for the millions of users, consider what percentage are using SMB and Screen Sharing and your number might be a tad smaller. Also if you google "Mavericks and SMB" you will get many hits on problems. I gather that Apple updated SMB to their liking and did not make it backward compatible? What a shocker. One suggestion was to connect to SMB shares using:

cifs://share.... as opposed to

smb://share

..however that made no diffference to me.

As for the other person who recommended Ubuntu all I can write is "puhleeeeeze". That is what a hypervisor is for. I use VMware Fusion as it is far superior to Parallels or Oracle's Virtual Box. But still I do not use Ubuntu; more of a CentOS person....

I will stick with 10.8.x until Apple fixes Mavericks. As for a solution, I am not an OS "hater". I have no problem using OS X, Windows, or any other. I am a person who wants something that works. When it does, I have my solution.

In fairness, I mentioned that I switched from the iPhone 5 to Nexus 5. There is no doubt that IOS is FAR superior to Android, however I wanted that bigger screen and I will put up with the shortcomings of Android for it.

Hi,

I am having some performance issues since I have upgraded to OS X Mavericks. I do not know if these are due to Mavericks or other performance issues that I may be able to fix myself.

I have used EtreCheck, which has given the following results -  but I do not know how to interpret them myself.

Is there anything I can do based on these results to improve the performance of my laptop? It also seems like I may need more RAM as I am getting a lot of page-outs which may be causing the computer to hang?

I would appreciate any advice anyone has.

Your RAM isn't sufficient at the moment (Page-outs should be 0), but that may be an artifact of the crap you have running.

Avast is useless and using 25% of your CPU.

Both Trusteer and the Rim software are known to cause kernel panics, but they may have updated it to work with Mavericks.

SIMBL plug-ins are always trouble.

I have no idea what these are, so I don't know if they cause problems:

Thanks for taking a look. I only recently swapped to Avast because Sophos Antivirus was crashing when I tried to run a scan. The high CPU usage was most likely due to it running a full scan at the time I used etrecheck.

Could you please advise me how I can act on the issues you've pointed out?

Uninstall the software using the uninstaller application or instructions from wherever you got it from.

I don't use any of it, so I don't have any idea where to find those things besides going to the developer's websites.

I agree with Barney-15E,

Personally I think you may be better off erasing & reinstalling. If you decide to do this take a full bootable backup (not just a Time Machine backup) via CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper!, Disk Utility or any other Mac cloning application. Check it boots & looks correct, then boot from the 10.9 installer, erase the internal HD, reinstall 10.9 & re-add the applications you need.

You could probably restore just the user home folders via Migration Assistant, but you will want to remove all your user login items & the user launchd jobs after you do this.

The alternative is to clean up the current mess… (backup first).

The kernel extensions are all capable of changing the way the OS works - you must remove them via their own uninstallers or recommended removal methods or find the updates & install them.

The same is also true of the background jobs labelled [system] (listed as Launch Daemons and Launch Agents). Update or remove the related software.

You also have 107 'redirected domains' defined in your /etc/hosts file, do you know why they are there and how to edit these? They may be harmless if you are using them for local web developing or something else, otherwise they may be redirecting domains that your software needs to access or blocking ad-sites etc.

The preference panes can effect all users so once again update or remove them.

If Safari or other browsers are slow you will need to look at updating or removing all those internet extensions.

The user launch agents & user login items can effect your user account either test in a new user account (to see if issues reappear) or remove the login items & launchd jobs - even then apps may re-instate these items on next launch, so you will need to update or remove the related software.

BlackBerry have an uninstaller (here is a thread with issues caused by BB - https://discussions.apple.com/message/25054361?ac_cid=tw123456#25054361)

Avast is likley to have threads on here concerning how to remove it if there is no uninstaller.

SIMBL has an uninstaller in the download http://culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php

You will need to search & read for rapportd, divx, HP's TOC generator, Apptrap, Facebook video…

We can take guesses at where certain files are based on the report if you get stuck, but it really is best to thoroughly remove via the developers guidelines.

To clean up properly will probably take as long as reinstall IMO, you'll probably eek back a little more disk space too which should help make the system a tiny bit quicker (empty spinning disks perform better).

I'd also suggest you make a new thread, so people can focus on your issues just link it from here.

P.S.

SIMBL is a tool that 'injects new code' into applications - it also has a system of plugins so you'll need to work out which you have installed & remove them too.

I must agree with Barney and Drew. I had a friend bring his MacBook Pro over in a similar state to yours. Backed it up, did a clean install and only reinstalled his most used Apps, no anti-virus etc. etc. and he went home with pretty much a 'new mac' in his words, with Mavericks flying along. He had collected so much old crud over the years and simply left it there through every upgrade. He also migrated his personal media and settings. So with a decent backup of your data, it may well be worth a shot. There is an enormous amount of junk collected in your system.
