Q: Upgrading iMovie from v9.0.9 to v10 with projects and events on external HD

I am facing the same issue, however I was able to import manually the raw film data the following way:

- (optional) Create new Library under File, Open Library, New... (you will get the option where you wish to store the Library

- Create manually an event, rename if you wish

- Right click on the event and select "import media"

- Find the orginal movie data on your various locations. My data was stored under Movies, Imovies Events and than each respective project. Select all files staring with "clip...". Imovie will start importing now which can take some time.

The only thing I have not figured out is how to import the old Imovie Projects.I have 3 that I started with and would like to finish... If anybody knows this, please let me know.

Yes I saw the post on the first page however it does not work on my computer. The update basically starts to hang after a while. My feeling is that this is either because of teh fact the data is on my second mac drive (I have a I mac mini server) or the RAM (now 4GB) is too little.

I open I movie and I photo from an external hard drive, the new I movie does not give that option and now all of my old and new projects are all jumbled, makes no sense, and I have some stuff on the external and some on the mac HD, this stinks big time

I am having this exact problem. The only catch is, I just did a fresh install and never installed iMovie 9. I also don't have a library with anything in it, and it's sitting on a drive with a terabyte of internal space. I've deleted it and let iMovie re-create it - same problem. It's in the default location, so permissions seem fine. It doesn't matter what I try to import, or what size it is, I just get the error that I don't have enough space. Also, I'm on 10.0.1 and OS X 10.9.1. Anyone have any other ideas? It's super frustraing, it's entirely unsuable.

if I'm not mistaken. when he is creating a new library, does not erase the old library.

thereby I think your problem is the lack of disk space.

Borrow a larger hard disks, or try to arrange the disks to have space.

P.S- It take some time you have to wait, DON´T STOP THE IMOVIE.

Tactos, thanks for this tip! I deleted that file in both the events and projects folders and also double-clicked the file named "iMovie Library 1" to force iMovie to open it. After that I updated the projects and everything finally showed up. Where I expected it. Now I just need to rename that library file to something a little more helpful (like "Media Drive Library") so I know which one I'm really looking at. Will wait until all project background processing is done.

I too am completely lost.  I updated to the new version and I now have "iMovie Library " and "iMovie Library 1".

Here is what I am trying to figure out:

   1.  Why are there now separate "iMovie libraries"?

    2.  How can I tell what hard drive these libraries have the files on them?  It used to say where the files were stored on each individual hard drive.

    3.  I used to have my files sorted by year, and each file was organized within the year in alphabetical order.  They are now listed in alphabetical order, but there is no more year heading.  Many of my old videos are old converted analog videos that do not have the original date stamp on the video, and I have no idea what year the videos were originally filmed.  The metadata on those events only shows when I originally imported them into iMovie, not when they were originally filmed.  How do I sort my clips again by year? 

4.  I imported some new video into iMovie and I have no idea how to control which hard drive it imports to.  Anyone know how to figure out which drive it imports to?  I have multiple hard drives, and some are specifically dedicated to videos.  It seems I no longer have control of that.  I noticed my "Mac HD" drive is rapidly losing storage space, and it seems that some of my imports are going there instead of to my separate dedicated hard drive.

1. when did the update imovie does not erase the old library. The imovie creates a new library.

2. to know what the new library, I send an print is how the new library icons are different. The following is the image of the new imovie various libraries.

3. to organize by date, also sending a picture to show (my version is in Portuguese but it will get there too)

4. in principle must go to the root folder of movies. but when importing new videos have to see to what library you are importing. Usually also some pictures to show.

Thanks Tactos.  I am trying per your suggestions. 

I have approx 150GB of movies to 'update' and even after imovie reports that Update Events and Projects has completed I see that iMovie continues to work in the background on this task - in fact warns me that tasks are currently in progress if I try to quit iMovie10.  If I look at my hard disk I can see activity in that the disk space is being consumed at approx 10KB per second.    Extrapolate that if you wish as an indicator but for now I'm leaving the machine powered on and will not touch it again until the background tasks complete.

This is gonna take a looong time.
