Hide or Remove Safari Sidebar

Lol at some of the lemming replies here. Yup, this "feature" very annoying.

I would also like to DISABLE the sidebar. As a workaround, I've been running Safari in a window stretched out as large as I can make it instead of fullscreen.

All you have to do is use the following keyboard shorcut to open and close the sidebar:

hold down the shift key, the command key and the letter L

Also: View menu has "Hide Sidebar" (and "Show Sidebar").

I'm very thankful for this answer and amazed that there's nothing obvious in the UI to indicate how to achieve it.

Mind bogglingly bad interface.

That s the same command as appears on the View Menu, it does not disable the Sidebar, it simply opens and closes it.
